My kitty Oliver is about to be two in august. Recently I have noticed that he drinks alot of water and pees alot. It scares me because I don't want him to have diabetes. Back in February I took him to the vet and got blood work done everything came back normal but it concerns me bc I feel like he is drinking alittle too much water.

If you're concerned than maybe another vet visit is in order. However, since the weather is becoming hotter (depending on where you live), that could be causing for more water intake.

My cat rarely drinks from her water bowl, but I do feed wet food only, which I also add water to. She pees anywhere from 2-4 times a day.

Does your cat's pee smell different?? - I know, weird question :p

I schedule an appt for thursday... He pees about 4-5x a day. They are big litter balls with no odor.

Good idea for booking the appointment! Always better to be safe than sorry.

Can I ask what brand/type of food you give? Have you changed food recently?

If the urine clumps smell sugary and are hard to cleanly scoop out of the litter box, that's a good indication of diabetes. Diabetics have sugary sticky urine. Most diabetic cats are senior cage (over 8 years or so) but juvenile diabetes can happen. Ask the vet to include a fructosamine test with the blood work. A regular blood glucose test isn't useful

Kidney issues can also cause an increase in drinking and urine output.

Sometimes food may cause a cat to drink a little more. Have you given anything new to your cat to eat?

His clumps are are little messy, they get stuck sometimes to the litter box but that also could be when the litter is low inside the box. They do not smell sugary. I currently give him nature's variety rabbit, salmon and chicken.

Well, I am surprised he is drinking more than normal. Yes, cats can go in renal failure as it is considered acute if its happens suddenly, such as getting into something they shouldn't, whereas older cats get chronic with age.  It might just be a thyroid issue. Does he eat a lot or want to eat a lot?

He finishes all his food. I usually give him split meals so he eats 4x a day. Two cans of wet food. I hope its not chronic what ever he has.

Sounds good, hopefully it isn't nothing too bad. Please let us know how it goes on Thursday.

I took Oliver to the vet. The vet gave me clavamox for poss uti, I have been giving it to him but now he has diarrhea. I really don't think he has a uti because he isn't straining to pee or having other litter box issues. I want to stop giving him the antibiotic because I don't like the side effect. The vet also did blood work and his creatine level came one point above normal (2.5). BUN and glucose within normal. She also sent me home with urine supplies to take a urine sample but it's not the easiest thing to do. I have a feeling Oliver has early signs of renal failure. He is so young and it upsets me that he might have it. I currently feed him Nature's Variety (2 cans per day) and free feed dry food (purina). I have heard that high protein diets are good for renal failure cats. I am thinking of changing his dry food to a Nature's Variety food maybe that can help and return his creatine level back to normal. I would really appreciate your opinions.

So they didn't take a urine sample and run it? I think to be on the safe side, you should go ahead and finish the antibiotics. Hopefully the infection is too bad as you stated right now, he's not showing any signs outwardly but it still may be bothering him. Try taking away the dry food and just feeding canned and see how he does. He is very young to be in renal failure unless he had gotten into something he shouldn't have which I doubt as its been 5 days since you posted this, I'd be certain he'd be much worse off than he is. The blood works seems reasonable. The main thing is he must stay hydrated, do you have a kitty fountain? He might like one of those.

No they did not run a urine sample bc he had just gone to the litter before taking him into the vet... He is acting normal and crazy like always. He drinks plenty of water from his water bowl. I will continue the antibiotics bc I want him to get better and will also take the dry food away.

Please keep us posted on how he does. I also wanted to let you know that urine samples obtained at home are not as accurate and sterile as ones obtained in a vet hospital.

I noticed my male drinking, what seems to be a lot for a cat. He eats wet food with a few pieces of dry. He recently had bloodwork that was normal. However, after reading your post, I think I will get a urine sample.

How old is your kitty? Do you remember what was his creatine level?

I don't know for sure because he was a stray but I guess he's between 1-1.5 years. I don't know his actual creatine level because the vet just called and said his blood work was fine. However, when my female had elevated levels, 2 out of 4 vets were not concerned and didn't consider the levels high. So, just because I was told by this vet that his levels were normal, unless I saw the results myself, I wouldn't know if it is actually elevated.
