Almost two weeks ago we took our almost year old male cat in to get neutered and have his immunizations. While he was there they discovered he had pretty bad ear mites, and treated him for that with a gel behind his head. The vet said since he's never been outside he most likely has had them since he was a kitten, from his mother.

Anyways, my cat is now a COMPLETE scaredy-cat! At first we thought, okay it was a traumatizing experience give him time, but it's almost been two weeks and he hasn't improved. He used to instigate play with our dog, run and play with our daughter and just be in your face 24/7 wanting to be center of attention. Now it's so bad everything causes him to run & hide, the dog can't even look at him without panicking him, and we had company over this weekend and he didn't even come upstairs for two days!!

So I'm wondering, will my cat ever be the same again?
Is it possible that the ear mights clouded his hearing and now everything is way louder?
Or is he just super pissed at us and we'be broken our trust? Lol.
this is so lame..

I'm going to guess that even though it's been two weeks that your cat just doesn't quite feel like himself yet.  Neutering is changing all of his hormones around and it sounds like he's feeling quite vulnerable.  As long as he's eating, drinking, pooping, and urinating okay, I'd just give him some more time.  He will come around and find his personality again.  Give him lots of pets and reassurances.

Thank you! I'm really hoping so, we've been giving him lots of attention, I run an at-home daycare as well so that doesn't help matters too much.

Poor fella...it'd be so much easier if you could just explain to him the birds and the bees and why he no longer has certain parts of his anatomy, right?  I'm sure he'd thank you in the long run.  Maybe not so much right now.

What was in the gel? I might be concerned if it was a reaction to that. Some insecticides can have neurological reactions in cats.

Oh really! I'm not sure what was in it, but I have another dose that I'm supposed to give him at the end of the month to get any 'larva' the first dose may have missed

If you have another dose, it should say what it is on the label. You can always call the vets office to let them know about his skittishness, they might be able to offer ideas or give you ideas of what to look for in case it's more serious than you think. My guess is it's pain or a medicine reaction, but if there's no sign of pain--no fever, no infection--I personally would lean towards medicine, even reaction from the anesthesia.

What kind of cat is he? Any Siamese in him?

I agree with misterwhiskers. By the way, I have a cat named Whiskers, he's a male. :)  Is it possibly Revolution? Is it a drops type topical that you put on the back of his head?
