Hi, I just adopted a cat from a shelter and found out that he is part Siamese. I can see this too in his behavior, he is super clingy and loves attention and yelling at me if I have been away. I live alone in a one bedroom apartment and it has only been 2 weeks but now I am concerned because I work 10 hours some days, and during school I'm gone most of the day. Will he become depressed? I already love him so much and it would hurt to have to get rid of him but will this be too detrimental to him to have to leave him alone so often?? I don't mind his vocalization or him getting into too much, I'm more concerned for his overall well being.

I do. I guess just reading about Siamese in particular ive seen they can get depressed being alone. But thank u! I can't believe after two weeks I already can't see ever being without this cat. Haha
you come home everyday, right? you could get a companion cat, but even if not, your cat is fine.

I would watch out for signs of separation anxiety just incase. But your kitty is part siamese so I'm sure it's okay. Even some non-Siamese cats may become depressed when their owners are gone for long periods of time.

So make sure you provide lots of entertainment to your cat while you're away. Toys, cat tv, maybe leave the radio or tv on so it's not so quiet. I wouldn't make a big fuss before you leave each day so your cat doesn't feed off of your concern.

Anyway, thank you for adopting a kitty! You two will have so much fun and love together!

Im a believer in having a pal for your cats, most do appreciate it.

And especielly such a lively type as siamese... Be sure the other is one whom too likes some merry wrestling, chasing, play sessions...

As your flat is small, build it in 3D,  rig up some climbing possibilites.  Use some planks, poles, and so.  If you are somwhat handy, its not difficult, just to use your imagination.  If you arent handy, you do surely have some neigbour who is willing to help for a small fee.

Hi,

I just posted a similar thread on my Siamese mix.  She has all the behaviors of a Siamese & I am worried that she will not get enough fun.  She wants to play, play, play.  Sweet but not a big talker & not that clingy.  I can not have another cat & worry about her well being.  Let me know how it goes with yours.  I got mine from a shelter as well.  She did not seem that active or I would have given this more thought.  I think she may be 50% Siamese.

Thanks for the article.  I have to go pick up a lot of toys.  I left more out to give her variety but maybe just a few would work better.

Why cant you have another cat?   If the reason your flat is small, the answer is to organize it in 3D.

No actually it is way too big for me; 2300 sq ft.  My condo assc. limits 1 pet per large condo.  The smaller ones allow no pets.  I tried to revisit this issue & got no where.  Makes me mad because we OWN the places.  I think the intent was not to have a bunch of dogs barking.  16 years ago a women bought a smaller condo & her daughter bought a small dog.  They told her that she would have to pay $250 per month or move.  She sold & moved into a condo like mine.  Until she leaves I just don't think anyone will allow this to be changed.  I think I will have another go at it but will probably have no success.  Even though there are a small number of large condos everyone who lives here gets to decide.

is there a size limit? my condo association puts a 25 pound/2 dog limit. no limit on cats.

Does management need to regularly enter your unit (with prior notice when possible) for maintenance reasons (HVAC, state required fire alarm and sprinkler testing, etc)? If not, I don't see why you can't just get a second cat and not inform management (pet registration). If you do get advance notice that management needs to enter for any reason, take one (or both) of the cats to a friend's house for the day or something ;) Most cats will hide anyways when strangers are around so you may not even need to take a cat somewhere.

They do not have a key for my place at all.  Problem is that I am on the first floor & have a lot of windows.  My neighbors, the landscapers, anyone can see into my windows. I have cat trees & window perches next to the windows. Some of the neighbors would just like to control people & others hate cats; not a lot of them but it only takes one to complain.  I just can't see having the blinds down & windows closed all summer.

Well, I got tons of toys.  She will only play with her favorite fishing pole toys.  When uninterested or done with a toy she stops & stands by the toy closet.  Yesterday I played with her 30 min in the morning &2  hours in the evening.  She took a short  break after the 2 hours but was right back at the toy door after that.  She plays by herself at times but this is not enough exercise for her.  Have been letting her in the garage for a something a little different & a good place for cat nip.  I am going to give it some time but I think I am going to have sneak another cat in here at some point.  Just for info:  DaBird has some new toys.  The nice thing is you can attach them to DaBird wand or a new fun wand that makes the toy spin in a random pattern. Buy on Amazon; have not seen at the stores. small birds, mouse, butterfly & bee.

We have two of these Turbo Tracks connected, both my cats play with it alone, together or with one of us.  It is currently under the dinning room table due to DH tripping over it.

Thanks, I will try one.  I got two additional cubes because she liked the first one.  It is quite worrisome that 2.5 hours of play does not get her worn out.  This morning I left my coffee cup & a box of cheerios out.  5 min. later the cheerios were being marinated in the coffee on the floor.
