I have a 10 yr. old cream persian kitty, Lily, that was diagnosed with bladder stones about a year ago. Our new vet, (the second opinion we got), changed her diet and also put her on steroids because her hind legs are weak and sometimes drag.

The problem is she used to be perfect with the litter box but since she got bladder stones she pees and poops anywhere and everywhere and Im sure she doesnt even know when shes going pee. Pooping, if we are home, we can sometimes catch her and put her on a puppy pad before it gets everywhere, but because of her hind legs being so weak she sits and scoots across the floor to poop.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to may be try to help her realize when shes about to pee or maybe help her get back to using the litterbox.

Nothing has changed. we have used the same litter for the last several years and we replace litter boxes every 6 months to a year. Im quite sure that theres nothing we can do as we have tried EVERYTHING under the sun that we could think to try and everything we could find on google. Just hoping that someone here just might have a solution or a suggestion.

Please know that I WILL NOT put my kitty to sleep just because of this, so hoping to not getting any suggestions for that. She is one of TEN kitties, but shes always gotten along with everyone.

Please help, if you can! we are willing to try ANYTHING! =^..^=

There are tips here:

http://catinfo.org/?link=litterbox

Try using a litter box additive such as Cat Attract to retrain the cat to use the litter box. A low sided litter box or a "step" to get into a high sided box (old phone book, etc) may help make iet esier for the cat to get into the litter box.

Is the only current treatment for the bladder stones just diet? What diet are you feeding?

Has the vet said anything about the hind leg weakness other than prescribing steroids? Do you feel the steroids are hleping with the leg issue?

I dont think so. The vet said the diet would break up the stones and she would pass them. She gave her the Royal Canin Urinary Tract food that we have to ahve a prescription for.

Hi!

yes the only treatment is the diet. She prescribed for her the Royal Canin Urinary Tract food that we have to have a RX for. She said that would break up the stones and she would pass them.

As far as the hind legs weakness goes, she says that she believes Lily damaged some nerves somehow. Maybe by jumping from a high area. Thats the only reasoning she can come up with for the leg weakness. Shes done blood work, x-rays, you name it. We've had her seen by two vets and we get the same from both of them.

The steroids have helped immensely with her walking. You can tell shes still a bit weak in the back legs...but at least they're not slipping and sliding out from under her every time she goes to eat or drink at the food and water bowl.

If she doesn't even know she's peeing, it sounds like she might be incontinent. Have you discussed that possibility with the vet? Do you know whether the stones have been dissolved or not?

I have an older at who has some incontinence problems at times, and I found the handicapped pet forums very helpful: http://handicappedpet.net/helppets/

They can probably give you ideas for dealing with her litterbox problems and hind leg weakness.

I've had 2 cats have surgery to have bladder stones removed and both times the peeing all over the house stopped immediately after surgery. Has she had xrays done recently? Only certain types of bladder stones are dissolvable with diet so if their still there she probably needs them surgically removed. Also I know you said the vet did bloodwork but you should ask if they checked her potassium. Low potassium can cause extreme back leg weakness and it's easily correctable.
