Every time I scoop/change the litter box, I notice an overpowering ammonia smell. All of my kitties are fixed and in perfect health. What could be causing this smell? Could it be a urinary tract infection?

Thanks! Now I know it's not a medical condition!
The smell is just overpowering!

I don't smell the ammonia smell unless I forget to clean the litterbox on a regular basis.

I use clumping litter and Peppurr likes to pee in the same spot over and over. I scoop the litter once in the morning and once at night. I wash the boxes every week. I can smell it as soon as they're done peeing.

Apparently if you use bleach to clean the litterbox you will smell ammonia when they pee.

I use liquid hand soap mixed with bleach and water. Maybe I'll buy Simple Solution Litter Box Cleaner next time I go into PetsMart!
