a stray cat give birth to 3 beautiful kittens on Friday May 2nd. We were keeping them in our shed where she had them and we thought she was safe in there. But last Sunday (5/10/15) morning we went out to check on the momma and kittens like we did every morning and what I saw was horrible. I spent all Mother's Day crying my eyes out. One of the kittens had bite marks on it's side (like something was eating it) the other one my fiancé told me it's head was smushed ( he wouldn't let me go past the door ) and one was missing and something had knocked over the water bowl. The momma cat was just sitting there looking frantically at both kittens. now we are trying to figure out if she actually rescued the one that was missing and came back and found it was too late for the other two :(  she comes up every morning and evening to eat and if we are outside she will stay around our porch but the second we go inside and she knows we are not watching she disappears. We are wanting to get her and the other cat outside spayed and find them good homes but I don't want to take her away if she still has the one missing kitten somewhere.

Yes, I agree, till the situation  has cleared, you must presume she had managed to save and carry away one of the kittens.  Its quite probable even.

Is she handleable?  So you can look see on her teats, if she is milking?  Or even, take her to a vet (or rescuer!!!)  to let a more experienced person take this look see...

Also, if se is handleable, you may perhaps have the possibility to  attach an cat tracer on her...  And this way get knowledge about where the new nest is.

So did quite recently one of our forumists, and yes, she found the rest and could save the kittens too...

If she isnt handleable, you can try and follow her, talking sweetly.   She will prob led you astray at first, but with some luck, she may led you to her nest.

So did for example one of my coworkers, who fed a little colony near her house.

Of course, if you plan to do so, you must have prepared a safer nest than the first time, when some predator found them, and managed to get in.

The last possibilitity, somewhat risky but what is done sometimes, is to spay her by an experienced vet cooperating with rescuers.  Small incision in the flank, self dissolving stitches. Let her rest  24 hours, and let her out.

The kitten should manage 24 hours alone, if its not very chilly...

Somewhat risky by apparent reasons, but its done sometimes.

Who is the other cat you mention?  The surviving kitten, the tom whom must be somewhere around??

another stray kitten who wandered up around christmas.. yes he is a male and I really wanted to keep him but he can't seem to stop pouncing all over our little maltese which already has anxiety issues and when he jumps all over her she freaks out and starts shaking... and the momma cat would let me come around while she had the kittens but now if i see her outside every time i try to go outside to approach her she just runs under the porch or under my car and will not come out.

I see, so not tracer here.   You do have the two other alternatives to try with.  Begin with the more conservative, to follow her talking sweetly.   (and of course decide and plan what you do, IF you find the kitten -  this has no point if you dont have all plans ready made).

The advantage with the last solution - spaying anvery soon letting her out, is it coverers also the sitauation where she is really alone...

Of course, do make a shelter for her nearby, if she wants to stay close and rest.  Be sure in any shelter you prepare there is an emergency exit backwards, so the cant cant be trapped inside there by a predator nor other enemy.
