Hi there
Can anyone please help me with some advice.
I have a female cat, she's about 4yrs old.
She's fully house trained where she no longer uses the litter tray but goes outside to use toilet.
But for the last 2weeks she's been pooping in the house in the lounge? I have used vinegar to try get the smell away so she doesn't do it again, but that doesn't seem to bug her?
What I don't understand though is that during the day she'll go toilet outside, but early morning she just refuses to and does it inside??
She's never done this before and im at my wits end as im worried my other cat might start doing the same thing and I can't handle the house stinking??
What must i do???

Welcome to TCS! A little more information will be helpful. You have two indoor/outdoor cats? How many litter boxes do you have indoors? What type of litter are you using and have you made any changes to litter type? Do the two resident cats get along well? Is the poop rock hard because then your cat may be a bit constipated.

It is possible that the weather is changing or some other outdoor change that has made your cat unsure about going to do her business outdoors in the early morning hours. Something may have spooked her as well at that time of day. Vinegar is acidic and can help neutralize smells but I have never found it to really work well. An article on how to correctly eradicate the smell: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-remove-cat-urine I find that StinkFree is the best that I have used. Also NokOut.

Another excellent and comprehensive helpful article packed with information and other links of interest: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/litterbox-problems-in-cats-the-ultimate-guide

Thank you for replying, we have no litter box as they are both fully house trained and never used the litter box? As for the residents cats, yes they have always gotten along, her poop is pretty normal as I have taken her to the vet and he's confirmed that she's all good on the health side of things? We have even tried to take her out ourselves in the morning to help, but she then just comes straight back in to use toilet inside? The other cat seems to have no problem with going outside though? do I have to start toilet training all over again and get a litter box again? But I just don't understand why it's only in the morning? Even though its winter now, it's never bugged her before though?

Yes - I would absolutely put two to three litter boxes inside your house - asap. Your cat is telling you she wants a litter box, IMO. And, rightly so, cats should have litter boxes even though they are indoor/outdoor and expected to go outdoors. Still - a litter box is necessary for indoors just in case. As your cat ages - the cold weather may be too much for her. She wants the option of indoor or outdoor potty and that is what she is telling by pooping inside the house. Mornings are very, very cold in the winter so she is not going to potty outside. IF you don't make a move to add litter boxes then the cats are both going to have no other choice than to use the house anywhere inside as their toilet. My best answer to solve your issues!!! :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Hi there,

So it's been 10days, I have done the above by putting down 3 litter trays in the areas where she was doing her business, i have been patient with her and making sure of cleaning up after her everytime she messes as she refuses to use the litter tray? I thought maybe its the litter sand she doesn't like so I bought different types?
But nothing is working and its just getting worse? What must i do now?

Good that you added the litter boxes inside but sorry to hear that she is not using them. Did you happen to read through the link I posted above "Litterbox problems Ultimate Guide" Please look it over carefully and if you have any questions, please ask and we will try to answer them and support you. I know this is a very difficult issue to have and be dealing with.

I would try Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract Litter and add in the Dr. Elsey's Litter Attractant as well. OR you can add the attractant to any clumping litter really. She may need retraining to the boxes and may need to be confined to a smaller area if at all possible? Since she started using that room as her litter box since no boxes were indoors, she may need that retraining process. You can put food/water in the spots where she is going too so she will be less likely to go in that area with food nearby.

Next, I am thinking, a medical workup may be needed. She may have a UTI or may even be constipated ? :vibes::vibes::vibes: for you and for your cat.

Agreed with Feralvr, also I am wondering, are you using scented litter? Maybe try putting a little dirt/earth from outside in the litterbox so she gets the idea, that there is the place to potty? Also if she poops in the house, try putting some in the pan so she may get the idea that way.
