Well I got adopted by a stray over a month ago, she will not even let me out of her sight.  We, the vet and I, thought she was pregnant but I found out today that she is not.  I have mixed emotions about this as I was really looking forward to having a kitten or two, but if she does have FelV then I might have had kittens die which would have been so much worse.  Which brings me to what I want to ask about - the SNAP test.

Now the day after I brought the stray in I took her up to the local vet at which they performed the SNAP test.  They told me she was positive for both and most likely pregnant.  :(  So I was suddenly faced with PTS a cat and kittens I had just hoped to rescue.  Thus began my frantic internet searches.  My understanding, and please someone correct me if I am wrong, is that the snap test is accurate with detecting FIV, but fairly inaccurate at detecting FelV because it can just pick up antibodies.  I have a cat here, but she is very old and already suffering from cancer so I am keeping this stray anyway, I cannot handle the thought of her being PTS and rescues here are bursting with cats.  With the FIV, I believe she can still have a good life, and again correct me if I am wrong.  The FelV, if she has it, will shorten her life but I figure I can give her a good place to live until then.  My biggest question is this:  What are the chances that she does not have FelV?  Has anyone here had a cat that has tested positive for both but still lived a long time?  I am really hoping for some good news here because the thought of PTS is killing me, and I already have an appointment to have her spayed next week.

Well, I think it should be repeated in 6 weeks to see, as it may be a false positive. Yes, cats with FIV and FeLV can live a decent life considering they will possibly be the only cat due to having an compromised immune system. I think as long as you have them separate from your current kitty, it should be okay. I do not have any experience with FIV and FelV myself but I've read a good deal about it.
