We trapped a pregnant, stray cat near my kids school on Monday night. Tuesday morning when I picked up this sweet love-bug, I said "Anyday, she'll have kittens. (Thinking within a week!)." I handled and transported her as gently and stress-free as possible. Well, today she had two naked, itty bitty, underdeveloped pink kittens and two tiny but fully furred and developed kittens. Neither of the preemies made it. We found one of the preemies still attached to its placenta. One of the developed kittens made it, the other was never cleaned out of it's sack.
So... she is laying with and allowing the tiny kitten to nurse and when I picked it up, it wet on me (yeah!), but I think mama cat is still pregnant. She is super skinny and starving, but I still can gently feel lumps inside her still distended belly. She doesn't seem uncomfortable or in currently in labor, and rather loved the attention of petting her body and feeling her belly.
I have raised dozens of litter of foster kittens starting as day old newborns from animal shelters, but never handled the actual births or experienced babies this tiny! We now live quite a ways from our nearest shelter and I don't know if the local vet will check her out as a stray, but I will call in the morning.
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.
