We trapped a pregnant, stray cat near my kids school on Monday night. Tuesday morning when I picked up this sweet love-bug, I said "Anyday, she'll have kittens. (Thinking within a week!)." I handled and transported her as gently and stress-free as possible. Well, today she had two naked, itty bitty, underdeveloped pink kittens and two tiny but fully furred and developed kittens. Neither of the preemies made it. We found one of the preemies still attached to its placenta. One of the developed kittens made it, the other was never cleaned out of it's sack. :(

So... she is laying with and allowing the tiny kitten to nurse and when I picked it up, it wet on me (yeah!), but I think mama cat is still pregnant. She is super skinny and starving, but I still can gently feel lumps inside her still distended belly. She doesn't seem uncomfortable or in currently in labor, and rather loved the attention of petting her body and feeling her belly.

I have raised dozens of litter of foster kittens starting as day old newborns from animal shelters, but never handled the actual births or experienced babies this tiny! We now live quite a ways from our nearest shelter and I don't know if the local vet will check her out as a stray, but I will call in the morning.

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

As you write it, the situation with her is OK, no visible troubles nor problems.  Thus, you can wait and see.   As pauses shorter or longer are common.

And here, its only natural, if she has more kittens to deliver, they will cook perhaps two days more.

BUT if you notice any  problems with her - save this state of some uncertaining "what is played here" - you contact this vet immediately.

Contact him now in the morning anyway, so you are sure if you DO have access to his services.

That alive kittens altough OK developed, is surely  somewhat premature.  You must of course monitor the development, be ready to step in, etc...  You know all the hereabouts of taking care of somewhat premature and or weak kittens?   If not, report back, someone here, me or some other forumist, will do our outmost to help you out...

Measuring weigh every day is essential.  Him being small, shall add 6+ grams every day.   A more fullgone kitten would add 10+g aday.

Btw, can you get hold of raw goat milk?  Always an useful tip, both for emaciated moms, and as  kitten milk....   A forumist told me,  groceries of "Natural food" often do carry it.

If you dont have problems with salomonella in eggs in your place, raw egg yolk is good nourisment for mom, adding to her food.

And yeah, these naked were doomed, given goners.  Kittens dont manage well too early deliveries.   Although pity of the other little but fully developed.  This could have made it with care and some luck.

Alike his alive bro will hopefully make it, if you are enough vigorous.

You have obviously the heart, and the skills - his chances are thus high above average.

Good luck!
