I'm mad at the Merrick pet food company!

First of all, they seem to cater a lot more to dogs than to cats. They have finally come up with a line of limited ingredient foods for CATS, but unlike the dog food, it is not in stores yet. Also, there are a lot more LID options available for dogs than for cats. The only dry LID foods for cats that will soon be available are turkey and salmon--no duck or lamb like they offer for the dogs. My IBD cat can't have turkey or salmon. She likes (and can keep down) mainly duck and lamb. They will have the LID canned duck food available at some point, but it will only be pâté. I contacted the company, and they have no plans to make a dry LID duck or lamb food for cats or a canned LID food that is not pâté.

Now, here is my second complaint. Merrick seems to think it is okay to rip their customers off. I picked up a can of the Cowboy Cookout, just to try it and to hopefully find another food that my picky cats would eat (long story). When I popped open the can, I saw that it was basically just a can of beef broth, with maybe a dozen or so pieces of tiny meat. I thought of the old Wendy's commercial--"Where's the beef?" I split the can between my two cats, and they loved it and devoured every bit of the six meat crumbs and gravy that each of them got. I don't think the price is worth it though, and it does have carrageenan. My cats do prefer mostly dry (they're addicts), so would it be worth it to buy this can of "beef broth" for them, just to get some more moisture into their diets? I'm not so sure.

Hi Tabbysia!

As for the canned food, most canned brands with gravy are fairly high in carbohydrates, making them not so suitable for cats. Cowboy Cookout is no exception. By reading their ingredients and guaranteed analysis, the food contains more carbs than protein and fat.

If your cat eats other low-carb brands with toppings (e. g. freeze dried chicken treat) I think that's better. Or would your cat lap up homemade beef or chicken broth? How about tuna water once in a while?

About the dog food brands I often felt the same... they just have more formulas and flavors. Guess the market is much bigger for dogs, I don't know

After my first post something didn't add up to me and I used calculator... let me correct myself!

Their protein(10%), fat(3%), fiber(1.5%), moisture(78%), and ash(1.8%) combined are estimated to be 94.3% of the food. That leaves 5.7% for carbs as wet matter basis. About 26% as dry matter basis.

So Cowboy Cookout has actually higher protein than carbs. Still, since it's a gravy type food it has higher carbs than other high-end brands. You can go for better brands carb-wise. Compared with generic brands, Cowboy Cookout is not so bad.

And I don't like how many other brands have needless carrageenan either!

Sorry for the mistake on my first post! I should re-recheck my post in the future...

Nature's Variety makes canned LID duck and lamb

The ingredients lists are at the bottom of each page. NV makes very high quality food. Personally I think it's better than Merrick.
I have offered my cats the Nature's Variety LID foods before--both the duck and the lamb. They wouldn't touch it. I wish they would.

try another can, maybe it was fluke. I never experienced it with chicken flavors.

Our cats used to grudgingly eat some Nature's Variety (chicken, duck, LID turkey) but they'd rarely finish a can so I nixed it. I think it's a love-it-or-hate-it food.

I used to buy Merrick foods for our previous cat -- Cowboy Cookout was one of her favorites in her last month! -- and the cans were generally very full. Beyond carrageenan, my biggest problem with that and many of their other foods is that they use a lot of peas, potato, and similar starchy vegetables. They were great foods to keep our sick cat eating, though.

That is so true, you are right, cats either love it or dislike it!

I have noticed that as well with the LID lamb / duck, the LID turkey seems to do a bit better, is more palatable among the LID meats.

I am currently using the LID rabbit canned and so far my cats prefer it over the regular NV rabbit.
