Question. Maybe someone has an idea on what it this to do. Let me give you a little history on my Maine Coon. My wife and I picked this little guy up way back in the day when we fit in my front shirt pocket. He was the run of the group. We got him for my wife but he ended up my best friend. He slept with my at my side as a kitten, followed me everywhere went and even jumped in the shower with me at times.

Now, he's going to be 4 in June this year and he's still my very best friend. Still sleeps at my side and I spoil this guy absolutely rotten. Here's my question, as a kitten he played aggressively biting and scratching but as a kitten it doesn't hurt so I played his way. Throughout the years he's mellowed out as far as that goes but recently he likes playing rough again. And he's now 26lbs and when he scratches or bites it hurts bigtime. I have scars. So, his new thing is he's all lovey dovey and plays and rolls and chasing string like a normal cat. But now he does this thing where we stops and rubs on you nice and loving then in a split second he lunges at me and either bites or scratches me. Being as big as he is, his claws are huge and stick in and draw blood along with the bites. He also doesn't let go. He makes weird noises while he's doing it too.

He's an indoor cat and always has been. I used to hold him when he was a baby and walk him outside so he could look around. Up until a month ago I was still doing it. But the last day he look around and right up at me and latched on to my face claws stuck in my nose and split my lip. After these "attacks" within a minute or so when he's done he's back to Normal. But some of the these attacks are brutal. He never does it to my wife only me. Is this a alpha thing because I over spoiled him or what. Don't suggest I declaw him because I will not. And don't suggest getting rid of this guy. He's my boy. I would never let him go. Ever. Any real ideas? Thanks!

Hi rsetter1 and welcome to TCS!

Just to set your mind at rest, we would never suggest declawing as TCS is an anti-declaw site, and we certainly wouldn't suggest getting rid of him.

So we're left with finding the source of the problem.  I don't think it's an alpha thing; cats don't normally do that.

The obvious first step is a vet check, as these things can occur when there is pain or some other kind of medical issue.

Is there anything at all you can think of that coinsides with the behaviour - changes around the house etc?

Also have a read through this article and see if anything seems to fit.

I'm wondering if it's happening when he gets over stimulated. Sometimes cats cat so worked up (whether excited and happy or through negative emotions) that they just don't know how to contain it and they end up lashing out. That could well fit with getting grabbed after a play session. Sometimes Asha gets so beside herself just from a big cuddle session that she'll suddenly turn and latch onto me. Thankfully, she's only 3.6kg and doesn't engage claws, but I can see how a 26lb Maine Coon could do serious damage.

If it is overstimulation, then the answer is easy - you just need to pay really close attention to his body language at his trigger times. If that tail starts swinging strongly or his pupils start dilate then stop and walk away so he can calm down. With taking him to see outside, why not leash train him so he can look around without sending you to the ER.

As mani mani says, a vet check is a good idea too - just to rule out any pain issues. While you're there, you could look at getting softpaws claw covers fitted. They don't hurt the cat at all, but should give a bit of protection while you both learn the new rules ;)

Thank you so much. He has his regular visits to the vet. No issues and the vet thinks my boy is just fantastic haha. But the overstimulation sounds more like his personality. It just comes in so fast that I don't realize he's overstimulated until it's too late. I'm going to try what was suggested in the article given to me for right now. It's more me than him I think. I love this guy and love being around him. He's so fun...until he hurts. I forgot to mention this too...I tried to brush this guy and he absolutely hates it. I bought many different brushes and he hates them all. I'm lucky enough that he sits while being groomed and he's very clean but hates brushes. Not sure why either.

Hi rsetter1!

I'm new to the site and just saw your post. We have some Maine Coon mixed kittens that are around 5 months old and they do the same thing to me. The boys LOVE to play and can get pretty rough. I also have scars and marks from "playing" with them. We'll be just playing around gently then all of a sudden they will attack my hand and bite me hard. Usually all it takes is for me to look at them very serious and say "Hey, why are you biting Mommy like that?" in a firm but not mean voice. I tell them it hurts and I don't like it when they do that and they usually calm down immediately but I have to let them have a time out when they get to that point. I just talk to them like I would if they were humans lol. I say Mommy isn't a kitty so you can't bite me and play rough like you do with your brothers because it hurts. They seriously seem to understand me at the time but we go through it every single day pretty much. I just keep reminding them. I realize your boy is much older and bigger but I think it does have to do with the stimulation thing. These guys are only five months old and they're very big and strong - I can just imagine how much "worse" it would be if they were as big as your boy. Hope you get it worked out!

Good luck!

Thank you. He's actually been very good lately. I still play with him all of the time but I know what to look for in his eyes and when to stop and walk away. Generally he's fine after a few minutes and I can sit with him again and he gets to enjoy his belly rubs. I always talk to him like he's my baby boy too haha. Ever since he was a baby I did. He's always at my side and always at the door waiting for me whenever I pull into our driveway. He knows it's me...smart boy. I think it's more the stimulation thing than anything . Thank you for the replies and help with my Recchi. I really appreciate it. I'm glad it's nothing serious because this guy really is my all time favorite furry family member. Makes me happy all the time [emoji]128516[/emoji]

That's great rsetter1, glad to hear things are going better. I agree with you and Columbine, the stimulation and ENERGY is such a big thing. A lot of people don't realize that animals pic up on the energy of the people around them and wonder why they are acting up at times. I notice if I am starting to feel any sort of negative energy/stress at any time our fur babies start responding to it. It's a great way to keep one's self in check lol.

I love hearing about people who are close to their pets - it sounds like you and your fur buddy are. It is a good feeling when they do things that make us know they are thinking of us :-) Ours follow me everywhere as well. I do mean EVERYWHERE lol. They can all be laying down while I'm doing work on my laptop or whatever and as soon as I even make a move like I am going to get up, surprise, here they all come lol. Whichever room I go into, so do they. Sometimes I'm literally tripping over them because they come running and kind of ambush me... #Help lol
