Scared Behavior

Hello!

I'm new here but a cat lover from way back. My baby rocket (who's 3) has been acting strange all day. I work from home and she's my little buddy. She's generally either trying to play with me or get my attention somehow or sleeping.

Today's she's been holed up under our bed and couch. Fine, maybe she's tired. But when she comes out she's slinking around and keeps staring at this one area on the wall. Then slinks under the table (under anything really) and is acting really scared. Not in a playful way but an actual kinda pensive way. Her pupils are big too.

She's a pretty mellow cat and lovey. She's always laying on me or kneading my belly or playing (or sleeping on the couch with us) but she's acting like a new cat would if you brought them home.

It's been today only and probably silly to be worried but it's strange behavior for her. Any ideas? Am I being a worry wart?

Thanks all!

She's definitely sound as though she's been spooked by something. Hopefully it'll pass soon. If not, try some Feliway diffusers, and maybe even some Composure treats/liquid to help her get over her fear. :cross: that she's able to settle by herself though.

Well, good news, she's herself this morning!

Last night, before bed, she was still acting weird. Slinking around the bedroom or sitting up by the stairs staring and moving her head at every little sound. She finally came and laid with me for s few but then went back to it.

Anyways, around 3am I noticed her doing her normal behavior (waking me up to put food in her bowl cause she can see tube bottom) and she's being herself this morning. Maybe she was feeling sick?

Thanks all!

So, not so good news.  She's acting weird again!

So this morning she was acting like her normal self.  Actually since last night.  Normal routine, playing, walking on my keyboard, sleeping on the couch and wanting to play.  She always comes when she's called and follows me around if she's awake.

Now all of a sudden she's under the couch again hiding.  Her pupils are dilated and she's being a nervous nelly again.  In fact, I just laid down on the floor to get her attention and she's too busy looking around like something's gonna jump at her than to pay attention to me.  I touched her and no response, just keeps looking out at nothing like it's coming after her.

If it continues I will take her to the doctor but I wonder what it is.

I think you need to find out what's going on with that wall. Somethings must be happening when you're not there to scare her like this. Check the wall before rushing to the vet. I hope you can get to the bottom of this soon. It's not much fun for you or her :hugs:

Yeah, now she's not staring at the same wall, just being scared but yes, maybe there is something going on.  Like our little routine at night is we lay down, she comes up, she kneads me, lays and purs on me for like 5 mins then she jumps off and lays at the top of the stairs.  She finally did that but before bed she was just sitting at the top of the stair staring and looking around all worried.  Then boom, 3am she was fine, normal cat unitl about 10am today.

We do live in a condo/loft here so we do have neighbors; could definitely be something.

I hope it's just someone remodeling their condo or something equally simple :cross: In the meantime, maybe Feliway could help her stay a little more balanced about things.

So, I decided to make an appointment.  She's so scared she's shivering and shaking and every little noise is freaking her out.  Thing is, these are not new nosies.  Nothing is different.  If she's better tomorrow great, she needs shots anyways but it's really strange.  She let me hold her and put my arms around her and she stopped shivering for a bit but then decided to hide again.

Could your neighbours have gotten a new pet? Since it's not just one wall, it could be a moving thing

Hope your vet visit comes with answers and good news!

Yeah, here's hoping!

Possibly but not that I know of.  I have friends who have a little dog who stay with us and she has no issue.  I mean, she isnt exactly happy but she's not scared.

It is windy outside so there's lots of creeks and moans of the house, but we are in SF and it's always like that.

So strange, there's been no change in anything except her behavior.  I've never seen her so scared, she normally runs to noises and is curious.  She's just hiding right now.  She let me hold her and that calmed her down a bit but now she is hiding again :(
