Diatamaceous earth topically for a cat?

I have a 6 week old kitten that is too young for any flea meds. 

Can I use DE in his fur directly?

I get different answers but it seems it can dry them out badly.

It just seems I cannot even use natural oils on a cat this young according to the various labels.

After reading the article @Feralvr  posted, I would  like to add that Dawn Dish detergent or Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo plain will work if you decide to bathe.
