Cody is still doing good after his blockage he had can't get him to eat any vet food but he is eating Friskies canned special diet for urinary health and I also bought some chicken Tiki cat food that he likes and it has a lot of water in it. I was just wondering if so many cats have this problem why are they selling food that causes this!!!

Hopefully he'll being feeling better soon. Did they send him home with any antibiotics or pain meds? Also try watering his food down, a little at a time, maybe a tablespoon of water extra per meal. Have you read Catinfo.org? Its written by a Vet and has some good info.

The kitty playground
I think dry foods are so prevalent for several reasons. First off, there's the convenience. It's so much simpler to just leave out a bowl of kibble than it is to do timed feeds. Secondly, kibble is cheaper per meal. It doesn't stink as much as wet food - that can sometimes be a factor. A lot of cats love it too (even if that is because it's coated in animal digest). The biggest factor, though, has to be that the majority of vets still see it as a valid option...often even seen as superior to wet because 'it keeps the cat's teeth clean'. The majority of owners will feel uncomfortable about going against veterinary recommendation /advice. There's also the fact that kibble has been fed for decades now, and most people still don't see anything wrong with it. As a kid, all our cats got a mix of wet and dry food. None of them ever has blockages. They died from FIV/aids, skin cancer, stroke and old age. Until I came across http://www.catinfo.org I has no idea of the potential dangers of feeding kibble. One of my current cats had a blockage many years ago. Even then, I had no idea of the dangers of dry. Because he's a stubborn so and so, he still gets a little urinary s/o kibble, but his diet is 80% wet and he's not had a recurrence of crystals or any other urinary issue...his blockage happened when he was 5 (I think). He's 13 now.

I absolutely agree that cat food manufacturers need to take a long hard look at what they're producing and stop making all these feline junk foods and marketing them as healthy. Sadly, without legislation, these potentially damaging foods are likely to be made as long as people out there are willing to buy and feed them.

I am going to keep him on canned only and if he sneaks a taste of dry rarely that will be all I have two other cats and it has been a challenge as they  were used to having dry cat food out all the time and now they only get it if I put it out for them and make sure he is not around. I have really noticed how much more everyone is peeing since I have cut way back on the dry food since I clean the litter daily now to keep track of how much he is going the best I can. I think it will be good for all my cats to not have much dry food in the long run. Thanks

Yes, the urine is so much more dilute. Back before I found this site or even Dr. Piersons, I always fed dry as I thought it was good for them only giving a little wet as a treat. I did not know any different. One of my males blocked, and while he was there, they found he had a bad tooth in the back, alas not even dry would keep his teeth clean as I thought it would. Recently, I lost a colony cat due to being blocked. His kidneys failed him. No more dry, not even for the colony cats.
