Hello, I'm new and am hoping that someone can give me help or even just encouragement.
About 2 1/2 weeks ago I noticed my 18 year old cat Tabby was having nasal discharge, she has had allergies since she was a kitten, I did what I always did but she didn't get better. We noticed a foul smell coming from her mouth so we took her to the vet. The vet said that considering her age her teeth are in "remarkable" condition. He gave her some steroid shots, antihistamine, antibiotics and some greenies threats for her teeth. We spent the next week giving her the meds but she didn't really seem to be doing better.
After the antibiotics were done, we took her back to the vet only to find that in about 11 days she lost a pound and a half. The vet said he believed that most of the weight she lost was water and kept her for two days giving her fluids and labs. The labs showed a slightly elevated white blood cells, one of her kidney enzymes were high along with glucose. She looked much better and acted like she felt better, he said that the high blood levels could indicate a possibility of developing kidney disease, diabetes but they can run high when a cat is severally dehydrated. When we picked her up Thursday he gave us some Purina NF kidney function. Originally he wanted to recheck her labs in 7 days to see if it was just dehydration or if she had, kidney issues or diabetes, based on the labs he would recommend changing her food or keeping it the same. He also gave us a different antibiotic, antihistamine, cough med and a supplement.
Well, Friday I noticed that she would go up to her food and water bowls and look at them as if she was hungry/thirsty but wouldn't attempt to eat. I opened her a can of food, she would take food in her mouth and most (90%) would just fall out the sides. I tried spoon feeding her, no difference. She loves licking people, so I smeared the food on my hand but she wouldn't even try to lick me. She was walking as if she was wobbly, confused, and scared. By scared, I mean that she didn't seem to be extending her legs all the way to walk, she would take a few steps and then take a break. She was still following me around the house but it was almost like she was in a daze. During feeding her head would sort of sway side to side then she would sit down and use her foot to hit at her mouth. She also didn't have any sort of urine or B.M. at all in her litter box. I got upset and took her back to the vet. At first he thought this might have something to do with high blood sugar or dehydration, but her glucose was normal and no longer elevated. He opened her mouth and we saw that she has pulled her tongue up and is holding it in the left side of her mouth. Her tongue is not hanging out of her mouth just being held to one side. When she does lick it comes straight out as if it's working fine. He said that she might have had a stroke which could explained the issues walking along with some numbness which accounts for the issues eating. As he was looking at her tongue the vet tech noticed that her mouth was bleeding and they found a sore underneath her tongue. He said that the mouth ulcer indicated perhaps Calicivirus which can cause issues walking and no appetite plus since the sore was underneath her tongue she could be intentionally holding it to one side due to pain. He gave us some high calorie critical care cat food along with unflavored Pedialyte and chicken broth.
We have spent the last two days giving her syringe after syringe. Today (Sunday) she has been trying to eat and groom herself. I'm not sure what is wrong with her, if its calicivirus than I'm confident that she will get better, but if its a stroke I'm not sure. She isn't walking any better and has fallen over a few times, although she is trying to eat it isn't successful. She still hasn't been able to drink and still hasn't passed urine or had a B.M. I'm having inpatient surgery tomorrow but my husband is going to the vet and she still has labs scheduled for this week. She has an apatite and its obvious that sometimes she likes the flavor of the food and come to me when she sees me fixing her syringes. Right now she just followed my husband slowly around the house because he was holding a bag of food.
I have had her since I was 10, she has been with me from the time she was eight weeks old. I have always known that she wouldn't be around forever but she is just such a central figure in my life that I can't imagine not having her.
