Our cat had to be put down very quickly. She lost the use of her rear leg, could not breathe and it all came on suddenly. THOUGH for months now her stomach was large like she had large roundness from being overweight... She consumed food like crazy and drank alot of water. I just assumed she was overweight and perhaps thought something may be going on but she seemed very happy at my moms who is ill. She always was an overweight cat but now that I think about it since my mother was ill I cut down on the dry only gave her wet. She seemed to get at a good weight so I assumed it was the food. Then many months ago I noticed her eating like crazy and it was hard for me because my mom who has alz just kept feeding her no matter how hard I tried to limit can availability. So I just figured the cat it was from the food. As I read with Hyperthyroid You lose weight and pee al ot which she did. To my utter shock her big stomach had nothing to do with her weight. When I went to the vet I said she's extremely overweight but when she weighed her she was shocked. only 10 lbs when she looked like 20lbs. xrays showed cancer and or fluid as she was having trouble breathing and some heart enlargement and a small liver but you could not see the kidneys due to all white... Basically I guess she was having a heart attack/congestive heart failure that caused her leg to go and perhaps kidney cancer which called her stomach extension. Has anyone out there had the same problem. ?? I guess I feel a bit guilty if hyperthroid was treated perhaps this would be different BUT to have stomach extension Which hyperthyroid does not cause and I thought a weight issue what was one to think.... I have other post on  rainbow  forum but trying to figure this all out..and perhaps someone out there has had the same?

I'm very sorry for your loss and only glad that she had a good life until the very end, and you put her down quckly and did not let her suffer.  You didn't mention how old she was.  You must be in shock still.  It sounds like she had a combination of disease processes going and cats do hide illness well.  She may well have had kidney cancer or some other kind of cancer which spread to the kidneys, and there is no way to tell if treating her for hyperthyroid would have helped or just made her last days worse.  Some cats tolerate the treatment well but others do not.  Thank you for sharing her symptoms.  I know this will be useful for people to read, and you might try lurking around the health forum to see if questions related to this come up and you can share your own experience.

i believe in what had to be done just curious about the other illnesses and if they contributed. Perhaps Diabetes where they drink alot pee alot eat alot i guess. But the stomach bloat is what was odd.  she was 14 1/2 years a pure white cat with gorgeous green eyes.... The vet said she would have needed shots every day thats if she even had it. She masked things very well and seemed happy but off kilter. running to the vet even when I called months back is not always the answer. I watched her carefully as I have had many many cats at age 61, This through me for a loop....and have her start dying right before eyes so quickly was a first.Vet said heart attack/cancer from the xray. Not sure if treating hypertension/diabetes if she had that would have made a difference esp if cancer is involved. I guess in humans its called complications.
