I was sitting here and glanced over and saw fresh drops of blood on the floor in front of the litter box.  One of my cats was just using it and so I set him down on his side and patted with a tissue on his penile area and bright red blood appeared on the tissue.  He doesn't appear uncomfortable and is eating and running around as usual.  What could it be?  Should I take him to the e-vet now?

If it were me I would take him to the vet.  With a male cat there is always the risk of  urinary blockage or partial blockage.  If that is what is going on the earlier treatment begins the better.

I, too, would get him to the vet immediately. That shouldn't happen, and it could be serious. Good luck. Let us know what the vet says.

Best regards.

Update:  I took him in and he isn't blocked
.   I figured he wasn't since he wolfed down his dinner before we left.  I'll take him to the regular vet tomorrow.

I had been trying to get him on grain free and freeze dried raw, but he started throwing up after we got through the first bag and he was giving me such a hard time about the pate, I broke down and have been feeding him fancy feast gravy lovers for the past few days along with Purina ProPlan Urinary Tract.

I am so glad he wasn't blocked.  I think you did the right thing getting him checked right away.  I know it's expensive and stressful for your kitty but that's something that should be checked for if there is any possibility that it is happening.

I had a Cat who got "urinary drops of red" after I began to use Clumping Litter: after I went to regular Litter; she was ok.

I also have read Vitamin K (in Greens +  yogurt) can "clear up a condition like this"; ProPlan has Vitamin K Complex.AR

I copied this from the web:  "this pertains to anyone cat including my cat":  "

Linked to Litter?

Visit almost any online forum about cat health and you'll most likely find someone who insists his cat's litter caused his UTI. This may have merit, as some vets think scented and clumping litters can contribute to UTIs because they irritate the cat's urinary tract, leaving him vulnerable to bacterial attack. No hard scientific studies have proven this theory, but a dirty litter box is one possible cause for these infections. As your cat squats to do his business, bacteria from the dirty litter -- clumping or otherwise -- may find their way back up your kitty's nether-regions and hunker down to multiply. Thus causing pain, irritation and infection.

Clumping Conundrum

Clumping litter isn't the total evil many cat owners would like you to believe, but it does have pros and cons. Because of its function, any animal who swallows some of this litter, or even inhales the dust, could suffer from internal blockages as it solidifies inside. Kittens are primarily vulnerable to this issue, as they sometimes eat the litter as they learn to use the pan. If an adult cat walks through the box before the litter has a chance to set up properly after use, some litter may stick to his paws, which he'll swallowed when he grooms next. Anecdotal evidence by owners shows that some cats do seem to suffer more UTIs when they use clumping litter, which may be due to the ingredients in the litter or to a particularly sensitive cat tush. No evidence proves that clumping litter itself will cause an otherwise healthy cat to suddenly develop a UTI.

Treatment and Prevention

Cat UTIs typically respond well to medications from your vet, leaving your cat right as rain usually within a week or so. Preventing future UTIs requires following basic hygienic routines, such as cleaning his box regularly before it becomes too nasty and offering him plenty of fresh water. If no amount of litter box cleaning seems to stop recurring UTIs, swap his clumping litter with a non-clumping variety for a few months and see if it helps. Your kitty may simply be overly sensitive to the clumping litter's ingredients.
Feline Pine is the best litter I have used and the safest for Kitty Girl...

Hey Thanks for all the info.  He doesn't have an infection.  She gave him pain and anti-inflammatory shots.  He's still eating well, though I am afraid to feed him anything but pro plan urinary tract formula.  Any other suggestions?  Unfortuantely he hates anything pate.

SMARTBlend Salmon & Tuna Flavor provides complete and balanced nutrition for all life stages of cats.

THIS IS PURIAN ONE SMART BLEND SALMON AND TUNA;  "SALMON IS THE FIRST INGREDIENT"

CONCLSUION:

Cat Food and Feeds which have "Corn or Corn Gluten s the first Ingredient might be avoided; as there are alternatives such as TROUT (first ingredients) and Salmon (first ingredient".

I research the Purina One Salmon and Tuna; the Salmon is "steamed"; then dried for the Cat Feed:.

Suggestion:  Keep giving the ProPlan UTI formula md then Transition to Trout or Salmon.

I contacted Purina and they say "Okay to mix the different flavors of Purina one and Proplan".

Key Words:  "Corn Gluten Meal; Whole Corn:  Trout; Salmon; Tuna meal; Taurine Chicken meal.

Comment  "Too much Corn causes a Deficiency of Niacin Vitamin b3; most feeds add Niacin B3.

just my 2c AR1951
(note: (I am NOT affiliated with Purina Co in any way never have been never will be.)!

f.y.I. thanks for reading AR
ps Corn depletes Niacin :Vitamin B3; Purina does add Niacin Vit. B3"!

summary OF MY MESSAGES Anne USA f.y.i. only !

1.  The cat may or may not have a UTI

2.  Corn depletes Niacin Vitamin B3; Niacin is an essential Nutrient.

3.  Pro plan UTI has Corn as the first ingredient ; whereas Purina one has Salmon or Trout as firs ingredient

4. The cat's problem may be a Deficiency of Vitamin K; if a Cat does not have adequate Vitamin K; UTI's might occur; I heard of another cat "who had urinary blood"; they gave the Cat Vitamin K and the Cat was well in a few days and never had another symptom.

Purina does add Vitamin K to all their feed; Vitamin K is found in "Greens; Yogurt and Probiotics; egg yolk have some Vitamin K; Vitamin K is an essential nutrients like Vit. B3 is!

that is all she wrote;  Anne USA 1951

ps to the Cat owner with the (possible ) UTI;  "According to the Purina Rep. you can MIX Purina one with the Purina Pro plan UTI.  You could make a mix of "2/3 Purina preplan and 1/3 Purina One (for the extra Salmon); this way your Cat would get the Vitamin B3 Niacin and the Vitamin K and get extra protein form the Purina one Salmon or Trout; AR1951 (check with your Vet before mixing the Purina proplan with the Purina One) The Proplan UTI has less Magnesium ; this is what Purina means by UTI Formula: AR 1951
Note Purina makes 3 types of Dry Cat Feed  "Purina Cat Feed;  PURINA ONE CAT FEED and PROPLAN CAT FEED; (all have the basic same ingredients): I might try the Trout formula for my Tabby Girl; I will sedn my review at a later date:) thanks for reading~

I'm glad he's on some meds to help!
Will he eat the chunky style wet food? You can always add a little water to that too. Not too soupy so he doesn't eat it. With my cat we increased the amount of water we added bit by bit everyday until he got used to eating it sloppy like that. We will give him whatever wet food he will eat, not just the prescription diet, as long as he's eating wet food.
