Hi everyone,

I asked for advice here previously when my 2 ferals found me & unfortunately wasn't able to trap them to get spayed/neutered in time.  Now I have 2 kitten that are 11-12 days old.  I wasn't going to intervene because they were in one of the cat bins I made underneath my deck. This morning I looked in on them and they were gone. I was worried sick but soon discovered them underneath an overturned wheelbarrow that was scorching hot in the sun. The kittens looked fine but they were in the dirt with ants on them. I was afraid they would overheat so I decided to move them into a dog/cat outdoor play tent and try to lure mom in since I didn't have a trap.  She went inside the tent and I have her and the kittens shaded in there outside on my deck. Since I don't have a permanent enclosure to keep them in outdoors, I want to bring them inside. Everything I have read says its ok to bring a mother & kitten indoors. I would prefer this over trying to raise them without their mom but I have a few concerns. I can't just let her loose in a room because I would never catch her so is it ok to keep her in the tent or a large dog crate or something like that? I also want to keep her long enough to spay as well. My other concern is how I will get her inside by myself (i will try to find help but not sure if I can). The tent is a pop up type so it won't fit through the door when it's open or I would just carry it inside. Any ideas? I will try to take the kittens out first but I am scared of harming mom or myself when the tent collapse around her because it's going to be like a big net around her. Sorry this is so long, I just want to decide what needs to be done in the next few hours (I hope).

Just fyi, when I first got her in the tent she freaked out pacing and trying to escape. She then dragged one of the kittens around like she was trying to move it. I sat by the tent and talked to her so she calmed & put the kitten down. They have been nursing the last hour or so and mom is relatively calm.  She gets within a foot of me when I feed her typically but I have never touched her and she can be skittish but she has come around a lot from the time she first arrived.

Thanks so much for your help. I have called several rescue places today and no one has returned my call. My vets office wasn't much help either - they just referred me to the rescue places.

I am thinking I should go buy some kitten formula to have on hand just in case. Is this called KMR? I hope the local Petsmart or somewhere has this along with bottles?!

I think your ideas are sound, and proceed to plan accordingly.   I will write more tomorrow, others may also fill in...

Yes, PetAg makes the KMR brand, that in powder is best.  You dilute as in the package, but 1:2 is usual.

You can begin with a bottle of the liquid KMR, not so reliable but cheaper, if you want to buy just a bottle just if, so you arent defenceless.

If you by any chance can get raw goat milk, this is excellent.  But bottled full fat goat milk is OK too.

Have a syringe of 1 or 1,5 ml too - kittens whom have mom, are often very reluctant to take bottle.   Tummy down, head up, in the corner of the mouth, slowly and cautiously.  Burp afterwards, and stimulate afterwards...

I think it's best if you can get the mother and kittens all indoors, especially if you have a room where you can confine them. It's a lot easier to socialize the kittens this way, and it can help socialize the mother, too. She will freak out at first when she finds she's confined, but they usually get over that fairly quickly, and most mother cats recognize the value of a safe place for their kittens.

I've used several methods to catch cats. One is to get a large plastic carrier and put food in the back with the door open. I tie a string to the door and run it all the way through the carrier and out the back. Then, when the cat gets completely inside the carrier and starts eating, I pull the string and close the door. Again, the cat may freak out, but keep calm and cover it with a dark cloth if you can.

When I've had cats like this in the downstairs room of my house, I turn the carrier into a "safe space" by putting towels in it. Then, if I need to take them to a vet, I can just wait till they get inside and close the door.

The key to success is learning to use the spaces you have to your advantage. For example, in a bathroom, cats will tend to hide behind the toilet. I've gotten semi-feral cats into carriers this way by throwing a dark sheet over the whole toilet with the sheet over the carrier. Then I push at the cat with something like a piece of cardboard until it runs into the carrier.

Thanks to both of you for the tips & info, I really appreciate it!

I was able to get mom & kittens in a spare bedroom without incident. It was getting really hot out and both mom & kittens were panting so I didn't delay. I was shocked that when I wrapped mom up in a blanket with her face covered she didn't even try to bite, scratch or get away. I hope she realizes I am helping her.

I did purchase some KMR to be safe. So far mom hasn't eaten anything. How long should I give her to eat? I can always try some different food or wet food tomorrow if she doesn't eat. She also hasn't used the litter box (I hope she can figure that out). The space is so large that one kitten doesn't seem to be able to find mom easily and when it cries mom doesn't seem to be concerned. I placed the kitten on her to nurse once this evening but will continue to monitor. I hope I will know if the kitten(s) haven't been eating properly. I assume they will be lethargic? They are still in the large dog/cat pop up tent which is much larger than a dog crate but I did put a cat bed (one of the semi enclosed igloo style) in there because I thought she may feel more secure inside of it with the kittens.

A friend of mine is concerned that the cats could have Feline Leukemia. I have a 3 yr old cat in the house who doesn't have access to the ferals. As I socialize the kittens, I would like to eventually have my cat around them as well in case I consider keeping one of them. Is this not safe for my cat? I don't want to jeopardize my Roxy's health. Any info would be great.

I will try to get some photos tomorrow and keep posting here. I feel better knowing I did the right thing by bringing them all inside. I cried the whole time I was doing it, not knowing if I was doing the right thing for the cats. I hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Yes, she probably realized this.  But wrapping them up, is one of the tricks.  And covering face and eyes is a strong trick, frequently done when training birds of prey, but can be done on cats too...

I presume she is tensed now, like quite a few new bought cats are.  Or freshly rescued.  That is why she isnt  eating nor eliminating.   So proceed to work on with calming her.  Talk a lot in a freindly voice.  Blink slowly with your eyes, yawn...   Have a soft relaxing music on when you arent there - classical harp music is best, but other works too.

The danger of Feline Leukemia - you will see more while they are there, it will be a sort of natural quarantine....

FeLv isnt very contagious, the dangers comes from bites, so as if you are afraid, its just to keep them apart.   Esp from the mom.

Distemper is quite more contagious, I hope your resident is fully vaccinated?  Is he used to roam outside, or is he pure indoors?

Later on, you can surely get a vet check up on the mom, including tests for Felv...

Tx for caring!

   Good luck!

Thanks again StefanZ. My cat is vaccinated against rabies and is purely indoors. I will get mom tested for everything when I have her spayed and then have to figure out things from there. I am not sure how high the rate is for Feline Leukemia in the wild, I just know the humane society here will put down a mother and kittens immediately if they test positive for it. I appreciate the tips about speaking in a soft voice & music because I hadn't thought about that.

haven't really seen the mother licking the kittens. Do they do this after the kittens have eaten typically? Their eyes aren't open yet and they were born early morning April 27. This is a first time mother so maybe she isn't that experienced? Just wanted to be sure I am doing all I need to do to help out. Mom did eat a few morsels overnight, but not much. She hasn't been in the litter yet.

Wow! I am very impressed with you! Kudos for bringing them all in. I assume you have the food, water and litter pan nearby, so I suggest that you leave the mom to figure it out and do not panic. She will calm down and begin eating, drinking and eliminating when she feels less stress. She will appreciate being safe with her babies. Just quietly, gently, calmly, slowly enter the room and cluck and get on her level. No quick movements. Make sure the kittens are with her and nursing. She probably has every intention to care for her babies, but needs to get her bearings. If you can weigh the kittens (in this room where mom can see you) then you will know if they are nursing well and gaining weight. With any luck, everything will start to go well. You can always supplement the kittens, but better if mom does it all. Keep posting!

Thanks Sarthur2! I don't have any scales that will register such a low weight, I guess I will need find some!  She hasn't been in the litter yet but has had a good amount of food and water today so I think she is feeling more at ease. I have been spending a lot of time in the room talking to her and moving about slowly. She even sniffed my hand without fear today & I took one kitten out and looked it over to be sure it's ok. Mom didn't panic at all. The other kitten wasn't within reach but will try to check him out tomorrow. I really appreciate all the help here. I haven't had any kittens before & certainly don't have experience with feral cats. Have a great night.

That is very good news! You are a cat whisperer! Welcome to the club! Please make sure both kittens are feeding well and report back if not. All sounds well. So glad! :)

PS: Your stray is likely very healthy. I have a lot of experience with feral cats, and most of them are very healthy.

Yeah, the weaker ones or those with bad immunity system simply dont survive long, and perish.   So these adult semiferales and succesful homeless, have typically both a good healing meat, and immune system well above average.

Also, in USA there are lotsa of predators, they "help" too to take away these sick and dying...  That is why you dont see them very often.  In Sweden there is a somewhat another picture.  Many rescuers are wailing about the horrors of sick homeless, as soon there is talk about TNR.   It is much exagerration to get home their point,  but I think it is we dont have as many predators in Sweden, and almost never loose dogs either.  Boys are not allowed to chase and abuse defenceless cats either (although it surely happens now and then).  So these whoms fate its to die, they must die by themselves, through all the stages of long suffering... No shortcuts, unless someone friendly person finds them, and help them this way - or the other way.

Bingo (mom cat) has used the litter a few times-YAY! I was able to check out the little runt today and I found a flea on him & was able to get it off. I didn't find any on the other kitten and can't really inspect Bingo to see if she has fleas.  I am going to do another inspection of the runt because the other kitten has eyes open & runt does not. I now think by looking at him he may have either really small eyes or an eye deformity. Even when the other kittens eyes are closed, the slits are wide & the runts slits are not wide.
I will try to get a photo of his face up close if I can get him to wake up & will post later.  Thanks for all the info & advice!
