I don't let my cat, Tux, into the bedroom at night, I need to sleep! However when I wake up, I let her in for the half hour before I get up when she proceeds to pounce and swat me! It isn't hunger, I get up and feed her. Is it just a need to play or something to worry about?

It's play and it's also because she missed you during the night.

Try playing with her more when you can. Or if you can't, make the play sessions more intense and interactive. Allow her to stalk and pounce on a toy. Play near the scratching post if she has one enticing her to scratch. This will burn off some of the excess energy. I would like to say all or most of it but kittens seem to have endless amounts of it.
