Hey, i am new to the site and would like to ask a question.... I have 4 cats. Mummy cat is approx 3.5yrs and her 3 kittens are 10months. 1 girl and 2 boys all of whom have been neutered. They weigh between 6-8lbs but one of the male kittens is noticably skinny, he is 7.6lbs when i hold him on the scales. I can feel all his bones through his fur. They all seem to eat fine but he is always asking for food. I have recently had them all dewormed but can a treatment not be succesful or could it be something else that is making him look/feel skinny?

My Mr. Grimsby was always a very skinny cat, but he lived to somewhere between 15-18 years (he was a rescue, so we never knew how old he really was). At his very heaviest, he weighed about 8 pounds.

If you feel your kitten is too skinny, but he's acting normally (i.e., playing with his litter mates, regular bowel movements, interested in his surroundings), I would suggest switching him to kitten food. It's specially formulated with more calories than adult cat food. You could also supplement the kitten food with extra treats, such as Whiskas milk, chewable vitamins, or dried tuna flakes.

Don't be too concerned just because he's skinny. Like people, cats have different body types. That doesn't mean they're sick; just that they're different.

Let us know how it goes with your little one.

Best regards.

Thanks i will try giving him kitten food again for a while. And could some tinned sardines or tuna be a good treat to fatten him up a little? I dont want to make him unhealthy by giving him sugary branded cat treats to often.

Successful deworming usually takes 3 doses, sometimes more spaced over several weeks.  If you didn't do that then any worms in the kitten are probably happy and eating your kittens food.  There also can be different types of worms that a standard de-wormer doesn't address.  7.6 pounds on paper doesn't sound bad for a small framed cat but if you feel all his bones as you say, then i would be concerned enough to see a vet.

See this body condition chart to assist you in determining if he is underweight.  If you think he is less than a 5, there is concern, and if he is a 1, then serious concern.
