Hi, So below I want to kind of give you a background into something that I think is a pretty important detail but at the end of it I am just asking the same question that has been asked numerous times before, my cat is peeing in inappropriate places and I don’t know what to do! Help?!
So the detail, well my little black cat, Kitty (so original) has been with us for some time 7-8yrs. She was originally bought as a pair and was intended to be “barn cats” for the home I lived in, (she was not my cat but lived on the property) well over time and when the other part to the pair disappeared we started to bring Kitty inside to the garages during the night and when it got cold. About a year and a half ago we moved from the country to the city to a small house on a busy street. By this time Kitty had made her way into our hearts and we were not going to let anything happen to her. Alas we turned an outdoor cat into a strictly indoor cat (too much fear she would get run over with the busy street) She honestly cooped well. She loves to sit in an open window and does meow at us we are outside and she is not but I think she is happy with being a house cat, loves to be cuddled and attention and never really tries hard to bolt if the door outside is left open for a sec.
Ok on to the more important detail. Did I mention the house is small? So both from space standpoint and from what type of caretakers we can be we opted to try and teach Kitty to pee in the toilet. We started with the box on the toilet and then bought a kit that goes in the toilet. She does pretty good, it was a process to get where we are today. When we are home I can hear her use it to tinkle and rare times I’ve caught her pooping. The pooping is where it has been tough. If giving an option of the sink she sometimes goes there so we just have to seal that off. So the peeing, like I mentioned I can catch when I’m at home her using it.
In this process of learning we’ve also had our share of step backs. She’s peed on rugs, carpets, couches etc. over the period of a year. For the carpets we’ve just closed off rooms so she doesn’t have access and in most cases we’ve replaces carpet with wood floors. When she pees each time we try addressing it and furiously go to clean it up although there has been times where the pee goes unnoticed for a bit and I think she has repeatedly done it in same spot. We take weekends away quite a bit and I think that is when it happens the most. We leave her with plenty of food and water and make sure her “litter box” area is clean. Anyways we came back from this past weekend stay away and it smells like pee everywhere, we think it was the couch. We went to clean it but it’s almost as if she’s used it before, still after our clean it was stinking of pee and we found another pee spot on the rug. What is going on? Is she mad we leave? Do I need to give up on the dream of no litter box? What are the solutions I can get her to stop? I am expecting my first child and I really can’t live in a pee infested smelling house all the time, I’m also ready to stop having to shut doors and would like to open up our house more without fear of her destroying it. I forgot to mention we have two dogs, everyone gets along fine but that’s another hurdle with trying out a new litter box, it has to be out of access of them (I know gross!) Please help me! Thank you! PS please don’t judge lol.
