I need help or advice for my cat who insists on pooping on the floor and not in the litter box.  I feel like I have tried everything and I am at my wits end and losing patience!  She is about 4 years old and has started pooping on the floor in the hallway but still pees in the litter box.  She has a couple of times peed on the floor too but it is mostly just the pooping.  I have cleaned and cleaned and it is a brand new house so there is not previous cat issues, and it did not start when I moved it so it was not being in a new place.  I do have another cat and she used to share the box no problem, I have even tried adding another box and still does not work.  I have taken her to the vet and they say nothing is wrong with her and that it is behavorial.  I am getting married and will have my fiancé and his daughter and dog moving in and I am afraid it will only get worse!  Any help or ideas would be appreciated!!

Okay, can you put a litter box in the hallway? Also is her litterbox cleaned and what type of litter are you using?

Yes I have put it in the hall, as well as next to the other one.  Yes the litter box is clean, the one she used since a kitten and it is the automatic cleaning one.  I put out just a normal box as well.  I use tidycat clumping litter but have also tried pellets as well as the corn type as well.

Some cats have bad experiences with the auto-cleaning type of litter box, i.e. it starts to clean while they are still there, or just as they come back to it.  You might try Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract Litter.  It's available in most pet stores and on Amazon.  It appears a bit pricey but it works miracles.  In fact they guarantee that if your cat does not use it, you can get your money back so hag on to the receipt.  Just try it in ONE litter box for starters and see if it attracts her.

She may also be havig dominance problems with the other cat.  I had on who pooped on the floor for two years (always beside the litter box, never in it) and I have MANY litter boxes.  His problem was the two females who used to persecute him, evidently, because after they were adopted out, his behavior changed and he started pooping in the litter boxes again.

Do try the Dr. Elsey's litter, though.  It works for 99% of cats who will not use any other kind of litter.  I have a friend with three Manx cats and that is the only litter the female will use.  Se gets it delivered from Amazon (she's an Amazon Prime member so delivery is free.)

Well so far that has not helped!  So frustrating, I was really hoping I had found my solution!  Still need any helpful advice!

Just picking up on what red top rescue red top rescue said about automatic boxes. It's well worth offering a second, basic box next to the automatic one for a bit. Use the Dr Elsy's litter in that too. If she'll use the simple box to poop in but still resists the automatic one, then it's fairly certain that the automatic one gave her a scare. Also make sure you clean the floor with an enzymatic cleaner to remove the poop smell from the floor. Good luck with sorting this issue. It's no fun clearing up accidents every day.

I have had a second box sitting next to it for a while and after I got the new litter.  Still no luck, and used the nature's miracle on the floor.

Do you have a large litterbox? Depending on where she is going, can you put down puppy pads on the area to make it easier to clean?

Hi Lisa,

Did you checked if the poop is usually little bals? Have you seen your cat running from the box at the moment he was pooping?

Well if you have seen any of this, you can try the same i did.

One of my cats sometimes do the same and it also started from nothing. So far what i have learned is that he get`s constipated.

I used to feed my cats with Dry food plus 2 or 1 canned food per week, now i have added caned food for 4 times a week and added a water fountain to increase the water drinkining.

That helped a lot and now is very difficult to happen.

I also at the beginning of the diet change "encourage" the constipated cat to use the litter box, putting him back on it daily to reduce any sort of bad memories due the constipation.

Also added a second liter box, in the beginning was'n that used but now it is always used for peeing.

Hope it helps!

I just want to be clear - have you got litter boxes in other locations as well the plain one next to the automatic one. I'm asking because (and sorry if you already know this) some cats like to poop in a different place to where they pee. Also, I've just been reading that sometimes cats prefer a softer, sandier litter for pooping. That might be worth a go too (slightly clutching at straws here).

You say it's a new house. Stress may well be a contributory factor. Have you tried Feliway diffusers throughout the house? Might help her to chill a bit. If that doesn't help, flower essences such as Jackson Galaxy's spirit essences range or Bach's Rescue Remedy might help her adapt and settle in to her new home. Again, if stress is the cause, you might even find Composure treats or liquid helpful. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious with any of this.

The house is new but this not start happening until 6month to a year after we moved in there.  Also I would not say the poop is little balls.  She has soft food every morning as well as her dry food and has water.  She has a pattern of pooping every other day.  And I have the automatic box as well as a second box.

Do you put the poop back in the box when she deposits it on the floor? Did the former owners of the house have an animal who pooped there and she's trying to cover up that smell with her own? Natures Miracle is a good product that uses enzymes to remove smells.
Does she have a lot of hair on her butt that collects litter or anything? Or on her paws?
I wonder if she hates the smell of her poop when she uses the litter box, if litter sticks to her rump, or if her paws hurt when she tries to cover the solids.

As for constipation, I find giving my cat hairball remedy seems to help with that.

Is there something about the hall she finds soothing or reminds her of your other house? How is the lighting and airflow where her litter box is?

I'm running out of ideas, so this is a bit of a weird one: what about putting a puppy pad where she usually poops. Each day, move it a fraction closer to the box (the open one will be the easiest) until the puppy pad is inside the box. Then gradually pull the pad further back in the box until you've removed it and she using the box again. You could even try this without litter. If she ends up preferring a puppy pad in the base of a litter box then at least it's in a box and easy to clean.

House is brand new, no former owners and no I don't put the poop back in the box but I do use the nature's miracle on the floor to cover the smell as well as shampoo it constantly!  Thanks for all the help!
