My cats stole a chocolate chip muffin and ate the top off of it. I don't know how many chips they ate. Assuming about 3. The vet said to give them peroxide about a capful.

How long does this take to make them throw up. I caught them immediately after it happened.

How likely is this going to make them sick for?

In dogs, the peroxide usually makes them throw up their stomach contents immediately, meaning one or two times in the space of about a minute. I've never given it to a cat.

It really depends on how much he ate.  If the peroxide was going to make your cat vomit it should have happened quickly.  Chocolate is a stimulant so one of the first symptoms is often hyperactivity.

It doesn't sound like a lot but you should be watching for symptoms like
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Hyperactivity
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Restlessness
  • Frequent urination and or urinary incontinence
The above is from http://www.cat-world.com.au/chocolate-poisoning-in-cats

Also look at http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/digestive/c_ct_chocolate_toxicity

And you can call the ASPCA poison hotline, it isn't free but they can calculate the dose and risk factor.  Or you can just watch and wait and see who your cat reacts but what I've read is that if the cat shows anything more than mild stimulation (or any other symptoms then you should go to the vet.

The peroxide didn't work. The vet said not to give him more. Now what?

Will the peroxide make him sick? If he absorbs it?

You have to monitor now for signs of illness or changes in their behavior. My cats have eaten chocolate ice cream, a couple of tablespoons or so, with no bad effects, so maybe the 'top' of a muffin won't be enough to truly hurt. I wish you the best, all the luck and keep us posted!

Here is paragraph from Think Like a Cat by Pam Johnson-Bennett. Page 208

Chocolate

"Mere ounces can kill a cat. Chocolate contains an ingredient known as theobromine that is deadly to cats. Theobromine affects the cat’s heart, gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, and can also cause the cat to lose body fluid since it is a diuretic.

If your cat has ingested chocolate, contact your veterinarian immediately". (You have contacted.)

Keep a close watch on them. I pray for their health.

I called the vet back. They said I can bring him in if I really wanted to or just monitor him for the next 12 hours.

Considering he doesn't look sick, I'm just going to keep an eye on him.

One ounce is approximately 50 chocolate chips. If he only ate maybe 5 chips, that is 1/10ths of an ounce so i think he will be fine.

My other cat vomited and did not appear to have eaten much muffin at all. At least now I only have 1 cat to worry about!

I swear this cat is trying to kill himself. First the rubber band he ate. Now this.  UGH! It's like he has a death wish or something.

Your plan sounds reasonable, and your vet's advice sounds good.  But your cat isn't trying to kill himself, he is like a 3 year old child who will put anything into his mouth.  You have to be vigilant and cat proof your home.  Good luck and keep us updated.

Lol
My Aby is 4 but he's still stuck in the "terrible twos" and gets into all sorts of trouble
He's gone to the vet ER more times than I can remember. Curiosity will kill my Aby one day

Hope your cat will be ok
