Hello guys, a week ago my Bombi (5 year old cat) started sneezing and watery eye too,so I took him to the Vet and they told me he had an infection, so they sent me home with antibiotics (drops) I applied the drops 3 times a day for a whole week, he is fine now, but now his younger brother is starting to sneeze too, I just noticed this for the past 2 hours, can I give the same drops to him? He is 10 months old and weights 11 pounds.

Unfortunately I don't have the money right away to take him to the vet, I get pay on Friday night and my vet don't open on weekends. I don't know what to do.

The drops name is Ophthalmic Solution 5ml.

Sounds like it a URI, often caused by feline herpes which is very contagious. It's not surprising that his brother contracted it too.

My vet said it was just an infection. No URI tho, but I was wondering if I can give the same drops to his little brother

I would not even though it sounds like they might have the same thing since colds and infections are highly contagious. Can you call your vet and ask if the drops can be used without examination? They definitely won't charge for a phone call and the worst thing is they'll tell you to bring your cat in.

How much is he sneezing? Is there discharge? Any other symptoms?

He is sneezing just a little bit, no watery eyes or anything, playing and eating normal. I saw him sneezing last night few times and throughout the night few more, so probably like 5 times in total. I called my vet at 8am, just waiting for a nurse to call me back.

I think I am being paranoid, but I can't help it, it sucks because affect my health too...

I'm sorry about this and how it is worrying you. In the mean time, you can try to ease your cat's stuffy nose/congestion (if he has that too) by taking him into the bathroom while you shower.

The frequency of sneezing seems okay not to be extremely worried at this point. Let's see what the vet says first. Since his eyes are not watery, the vet might advise not to use the same drops.

I would ask your vet about some off the counter meds to help with the cat. Things like immune system boosters. See what they recommend.

Where can i get Lysine?
I get mine from (  vitacost.com  )  It's in powder form to mix into the wet food.  I used to use treats but decided I didn't want the extra added fillers that treats have.   There's also some really good posts strictly on Lysine .  Look under Health forum or just search Lysine.

Perhaps to ease your worries, I can talk about my own experience with a sneezing cat.

My kitty started sneezing Sunday night. A few sneezes every few hours. I told the vet about it on Monday and they said to wait it out for a bit. Then from Tuesday to Wednesday, my cat would sneeze every few minutes. He had a runny nose by then. Thursday to Friday, he didn't sneeze as much but his eyes were watery. I finally went to the vet on Friday and he prescribed some lysine and another liquid med that I can't remember the name of.

He told me it's probably the calicivirus and the most we can do is boost his immune system and wait for him to fight it through.

I'm not saying my cat's story is the same as yours but I'm hoping to help with easing your worries. I waited a while before going to the vet too.

(I don't encourage delaying vet visits but sometimes, it's not avoidable like in your case)

If he is drinking and eating, then you can take a breather. If he refuses food, it may be because he can't smell it. So you may want to feed wet food if you don't already. Or add some smelly tuna juice to make his food more appetizing. At one point, I was hand feeding my cat because he was so sick. My kitty slept a lot during the time so that might be something that will happen.

Giving him some lysine is a good idea. I was hesitant to suggest that because I wasn't sure if it is okay to suggest medicine to other users.

I would definitely call the vet again and see what's taking them and kindly remind them.

Thank you for your words Mingking, the vet gave me a call a few mins ago, but it wasn't the one who took care of my first cat, so he pretty much didn't say anything but to take him. He is eating, drinking, playing, and going to the bathroom like he always does, but just the sneezing now and then. I will get the Lysine to boost their immune system, should I get it from the vet?

I know I'm over worrying myself, but my OCD doesn't help either. It's always like this about everything.

My cat was sneezing just the other night.  But he has allergies.  Can you believe it, a cat gets allergies too.  It'll just have to be process of elimination with symptoms and such.  Mingking has a great point with the tuna juice to get your kitty to eat or even drink water.  You can add it to both to help.  Don't worry your a good mommy and your taking care of your kitty
I know it's difficult because they cannot tell us what's wrong.  We have to relay on what we can observe and a good vet.  I myself am so very thankful to this site.  I've learned lots and you'll find a ton of support here

I just called the vet again asking about Lysine and she said not to give him that because that's only for sick cats..... I'm so freaking confused right now. Pissed off too because the vet is supposed to help u but they don't, they talked to me like I was a horrible person for waiting to take my cat to them.

Is it possible for you to go to another vet? Preferably one that is open on the weekend so you won't have to wait until Monday to bring your cat in?

All vets are different and will have opposing opinions and practices. At this point, I would listen to your vet. In the mean time, perhaps do some research on google and on the forum about Lysine. And come to a comfortable decision whether or not you would like to supplement lysine. But again, if I were in your shoes, I would go call up another vet that is open on weekends.

And I also wanted to say you are not a horrible person. You are doing the best you can in your circumstances.

We had to go through a couple vets before we came to one that worked for our cats and us.  Sometimes you just have to go with your gut if you know what I mean.  What feels right to you and the health of your kitty.  No one should judge.  We all have different circumstances etc.

The other vet near me is an hour away, there is an ER 30 mins away but just the visit is 100 bucks ugh. I don't see my cat sick, just the few sneezing now and then, I think I'll wait a few more days, if he gets worse I will just take him in. Meanwhile I will keep an eye on him and try to calm myself down.

I get very paranoid because a year ago I lost my very first cat due to cancer and since then I worry too much. This is TMI but a week ago when I saw my other cat sick I worried too much to the point of causing myself an hemorrhage... Only when I get stressed out that bad I get those.

Yes, ERs are very expensive and judging from the descriptions of your cat's symptoms, this is not an emergency situation. I would only go if you see blood, he's sneezing until he can't breathe, etc.

I would call that vet an hour away and see what they say. You might just have to take that hour drive on the weekend if the sneezing persists and becomes more frequent.

For now, in my own opinion, I wouldn't worry too much. I may keep the cats apart just in case. I'm not sure if the infected can infect another and THEN infect the first cat again!
Hopefully someone else has an answer to that.

I'm sorry to hear about your first cat. But please take care of yourself!
If you need to talk, there are many nice and helpful people here on this forum that will be happy to help. Me included! :)

I have to say that I am so lucky to have the vet I use. Several years ago one of mine had a URI and he got a shot and some antibiotics. My vet knew I had a few other cats and told me that it was contagious and if they started showing the same signs to give them the meds too. He gave me enough for all of my cats. He also knew they were close to the same weight and size so he said the same dosage would be fine.
