I need to upgrade my iPod. Currently I have a 1 GB iPod Shuffle. It doesn't hold much, maybe 80 songs, and none of my downloaded podcasts will play on it. I previously had a 20 GB iPod Classic which was accidentally dropped in water
and stopped working. Not sure which generation that one was but it was the non-color screen one with the (at the time) brand new click wheel. So I'm upgrading but not sure if I should choose a Nano or a Touch
I did the comparision thing on the Apple web site but I'm still indecisive which I want
. I'm mainly going to use the iPod to listen to music and podcasts so I'm kind of leaning towards the Nano which also has a FM radio feature. But the Touch has iTunes and games and other apps. Does anyone have either iPod and have an opnion on pros and cons of each?

I've never owned an iPod Nano but I have had a few generations of iPod Touch (before switching to the iPhone which is basically the same thing but with cellular service). I know there are apps that stream FM radio so if you get the Touch, it's still there.

I would get the Nano if you don't care about games and want something small to fit comfortably in your pocket. I have the touch screen shuffle for when I'm exercising so I don't have to hold the block that is my phone

ALTHOUGH! Depending on what generation of iPod Touch you get, the camera is fantastic and you can take nice pictures of your kitty and post then on Instagram.

(I wasn't much help, was I? Sorry!)

I had a 5th generation iPod nano that I "washed" in the washer. I was (and still am) sick about it. It had the click wheel. Replaced it with another nano (7th generation). I use mine strictly for music when I'm walking, so a nano is fine with me. It's only 16 gb, I think the 7th generation only comes with 16 gb, but honestly, it holds a ton of music. If you're only going to use it for music, you'd be fine with a nano.

I like my nano because I can put the earbuds in my ear, thread the wire under my shirt, plug it into the nano and tuck the nano into my pocket. (I'm using Skull Candy earbuds because their wire is longer than the buds that came with my iPod.) The nano fits right into my pocket. I can tuck it in and get it back out when I need it. I'm satisfied.

oh Canada~
I have an iPod Touch 4th gen. It's kind of slow (relative to its more recent versions), partly because the software is outdated, and they've pretty well stopped supporting it but I still use it as an alarm clock, to stream video, and an app or two that I've just been too lazy to transfer to my phone. It was very handy when I was using it non stop as a surrogate smart phone (before I had one, or before I had a decent one) but once I got a better phone, the iPod just sat and collected dust. I don't listen to music when I'm out anymore so had it not gotten so much use several years ago, I would call it a waste of money.

I used to work for iTunes Support, and there are numerous complaints about iOS versions quickly going out of support, that if you don't stay up to date, apps won't work or update since app developers are obligated to stay recent with the latest iOS no matter how buggy it is... not to mention the thousands of people who get suckered into in-app (microtransaction) purchases accidentally or whose children charge up literally thousands of dollars buying in-game donuts and junk. But that is very easy to avoid.

If you just want music, podcasts, and radio, the Nano would be better. It's also more convenient to carry and to exercise with. The Touch would be bulky and kind of souped out for your needs. If you already have a smart phone that functions and has the apps you're interested in, a Touch would just be redundant. It would really only be worth it if you intended to use it like a WiFi-based smart phone.

Thanks
I think I will go for a Nano. I have to use up my work issued reward points.

Question: On the Apple iPod Nano site, the picture is of the buttons for Music, Videos, Fitness, Podcasts, Photo, and Radio. At the bottom, there are two dots which typically means there is a second screen with additional buttons. What is on the second screen?

My ears are too weird shaped for an Apple ear bud to fit and stay in
I've been using Shure ear buds.

Here you go. I don't have my iPod with me at work today because I didn't walk during lunch and I don't remember all the buttons, only the ones I use all the time!

Here is the URL for the manual:  https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1624/en_US/ipod_nano_user_guide.pdf

If you're just using it for music and podcasts, I'd go with the nano. I still have a 1st generation nano that DH bought for me. It still works.

Now the hard part is deciding which color to get
I'm deciding between blue or green or yellow or silver.

Do any of you Nano users have a case that you recommend? I need one with a clip so I can clip it into a pocket in my work clothes and not worry about it falling out.

The one that is available right now, 7th generation http://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/

Looks like my iPod Classic was a 4th generation non-color http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_iPod_models My current Shuffle is a 2nd generation. I knew someone who had a Mini in bright pink.

Hmm... it looks like green is a bit too bright. At least online anyways. I'll have to check out the Nano in store to see the exact color. Then I'll buy online with my points.

I don't use a case, but I probably should. I can just slip it into my pocket and go.

I need a hard case with a clip. My work environment is bad enough for a cell phone (way too many scratches and dings from being banged around and being dropped)

For a  soft case, try a sock
It works just as well as one you can buy.

Another question: I was reading reviews on Amazon and some users are complaining about the lack of a screen lock feature on the 7th generation Nano. Basicaly the screen is always "on" (active) and it's too easy for the app buttons to be pushed while in a pocket or bag and thus draining the battery. Or you could be listening with the Nano in a bag and all of a sudden the volume jacks up to high because something in the bag bumped the volume button. None of these reviews say if the Nano was in a full wrap around case or not but it sounds like it wasn't. Have any of you experienced similar things with the lack of a screen lock?

I can't say anything because, when I'm not using my iPod, I keep it in its case, the case that it came in. I take it back and forth to work in its case (unless I'm going to listen to it in my car). I put everything in the case, tuck the case into one of my sneakers and put it in my walking clothes tote. Carry it that way. So in my case, it's not been a problem.
