I don't normally post about my personal life, but my boyfriend Greg proposed to me yesterday and I'm so happy that I wanted to share the news with everyone here!

We had sort of been talking about it over the past few months, but hadn't made any real plans. Neither of us really place much emphasis on marriage, and we really planned to just do it right before we wanted to have a child (which won't be for a few years), but then we started thinking of the legal benefits and how I really could use health insurance, etc. so for practical reasons more than anything is how it started coming up.

But, I had no idea he was planning to ask now, and was completely surprised. Actually he didn't even know he was going to ask me yesterday either, he said he knew he'd do it sometime before Christmas. But I was away the whole weekend, and when I came home yesterday evening we both were just so happy to see each other so he told me to wait for a minute, and came back with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen, his grandmother's actually, and the rest is blurry because I was crying so much lol! And, despite our views on marriage we both are just so overcome with emotion and so excited and happy it's kind of funny!

The ring was his grandmother's from her marriage in 1939 and is just a gorgeous diamond and white gold ring in an antique square setting which is just so unique and I love it! I didn't want a diamond ring, but this one is just so special. So needless to say I am very happy and wanted to share the news with you all!

Congratulations on your engagement!!!!!!

Oh yeah, definitely show the ring - it is even more special when it is an old one like that!

That is awesome. Rings that are passed down have such sentimental value. One day you might be giving it to your grandson to give to his future wife.

Awwww...CONGRATS!

The ring sounds exactly like my grandmother's wedding ring!! I'm not into diamond rings at all (not into jewellery), but I told Rob that if he EVER asks me to marry him, I want my grandmother's style ring! Can you get a picture of it? I'd love to see it since my grandmother's ring was made in the late 1920's/early 1930's as well. It would be funny if it was the same design!

Rob and I don't have plans to get married. We've been together 8 years and are common-law, but if the marriage twinge hits us in the future, I'm getting my grandmother's ring!

Are Bella and Pepper going to be the flower and ring bearers?

Congratulations! I love old rings, too. I inherited my grandmother's engagement and wedding rings, and also have my mother's wedding ring (it no longer fits her), plus some rings from my great-grandmother and great-aunts. I don't have kids, so I'm in the process of passing them down to my nieces and nephews (my sister's hands are too big, which is why I ended up with all the jewelry). I'm not a romantic person, but I believe legalizing a relationship has a lot of (financial) advantages, so marrying is probably the smart thing to do.
