So my friends kids found 3 abandoned kittens behind their apartment complex and they were so hungry that they were eating their dead sibling. My friend took them in and is finding good homes. I took a female 4 days ago and named her Cami. My friend said that Cami was eating hard food. She's taken maybe a few bites but otherwise she comes up to me meowing and trying to nurse on me. I've been giving her bottles whenever she does this. She is extremely attached to me and gets visibly stressed when she is away from me. If I leave the room and don't carry her with me (I don't trust my dogs with her), she cries at my door or gets in a panic trying to climb up my leg. This morning I was in the shower and she was pacing and crying the whole time. I think she views me as her mom and I'm trying to teach her like a mother cat would. Whenever she bites or gets too rough, I hiss or growl and she immediately stops. I'm worried about her separation anxiety. And I really need to get her on a feeding schedule. Based on this video of her trying to nurse on me, how old do you think she is? Any advice or input would be appreciated!!

Very often you see kittens exhibiting that sort of behaviour when they were removed from mum too soon. I have an 11 month rescue cat that still kneads and suckles on me. Sometimes, this behaviour sticks for life.

It's not possible to age your kitten from that clip. The best way to age a kitten is by looking at its teeth. A vet or vet tech is best placed to do this, but it's possible that one of the kitten experts on this site could give you some guidance if you're able to get the appropriate pics.

My heart goes out to those precious abandoned babies, bless you and your friend for helping them. It's not unusual at all for a kitten that young to try to nurse, I'm sure she does see you as her mom and is trying to comfort herself. She should be eating canned food if at all possible, in addition to the hard, or wet and soak the hard food so it is easier for her to eat. Eventually she'll become more sure of herself and not worry so much about being abandoned and will calm down. Her climbing your leg is a common activity with kittens too, she'll outgrow that too. Give her as much as she wants to eat, don't worry about limiting her until she is an adult, about a year old. As for your dogs, I kept mine on a leash in the house while they were around the kitten, you have to have absolute control over them until you are sure they won't harm the kitten. I trained a hunting dog to accept cats so I know it can be done. She has to be accepted as something that is yours and something you love, then your dogs will accept her as part of the 'pack' that is your family. She is absolutely beautiful and I'm sure she loves you very much already for giving her a home, all the luck!!!

Cami is very sweet. The best food for kittens - and cats - is canned food. The moisture is good, it is higher in protein, and the quality of wet food is better than dry (which has things like corn gluten etc that cats cannot digest.) I know dry food is easier for you but it is not as good for Cami.

Look for canned food labeled as "kitten food" - Fancy Feast has one. It is higher in protein and fats that kittens need while they are growing so quickly.

put some on a flat plate. Add a little kitten milk to make it mushy. She will be a messy eater in the begining so be prepared with a damp washcloth to clean her up.

At this point feed her frequently, as much as she wants to eat. If you want to leave some dry food out perhaps while you are not home some of our experienced members recommend Royal Canin Baby Cat - the pieces are smaller and easier for kittens to manage. But that is to supplement the canned food.

@catwoman707  @StefanZ  Any good advice for OP (original poster)?

Good luck and a happy life to you and Cami. And do post more pictures as your pretty girl grows up. They do change very quickly.

She looks about six weeks old to me. But that's a guess. She obviously got "dumped". So glad you'e taken her in! Good advice from posters above me! :)
