My cat has been on natural balance wild boar dog food. With taurine supplemented.

I've tried every other food from evo to natures variety and he is allergic to them all. It appears this is the only protein he is not allergic to.

Are there other pork cat foods out there that i can try?

Here is the ingredients list of his current food

Wild Boar, Water for Processing, Brown Rice, Canola Oil, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Guar Gum, Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor, Inulin, Carrageenan, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Zinc

I've tried Evo 95 percent duck , evo 95 percent beef
Natural balance venison
Natural balance lamb
Natures variety Turkey lid, lamb, duck lid

All these diets failed to help. Natural balances pork dog food is the only food which completely clears up his skin problems.

I switched him back to Evo as i know the pork isn't balanced for long term use even with taurine supplemented. He has already broken out and its only been three days!

Natural balance will not release their guaranteed analysis. I tried emailing them to ask. So i can't easily balance out their dog food. They told me to have my vet call them! And knowing how busy vets are....

I would ask the vet to give Natural Balance a call anyways. It woudl just take a few minutes for the vet to ask them to email him / her a copy of the nutritional values.

Try this food: http://www.evangersdogfood.com/?p=dog_gamemeats None of these are a complete diet so you would need to supplement more than just the taurine.

Is a homecooked or raw diet an option?

Nature's Variety Instinct also makes canned pork food and Primal just started making pork raw food, in freeze-dried and frozen versions.

Good luck!

Nature's Variety recently changed their canned pork to LID, limited ingredient pork - just pork and peas. It's interesting about pork, I had read on various sites, including vet sites, that pork can be hyper-allergenic yet my cats (who also have skin allergies, chicken, turkey) are doing much better on pork. I use Primal's freeze dried pork. Good luck. ;)

I think for now anyway pork is a good one to try.  It is relatively new to pet food  because of misinformation about it being bad for pets.  I think kitties have a real tendency to develop allergies after exposure to a protein over a long period of time.  The only one I have tried is Hounds & Gatos.  It does have a different texture to it, one that either a kitty likes or they simply will not eat.  My kitties will eat it.  The last time I checked they do use duck liver in all of their foods, I don't know if it is still true.  They have no veggies or grains but they do have multiple thickeners.  I don't understand the deal with the thickeners.  I am guessing if they cut back on those it wouldn't have a different texture.

So far so good on the pork we've been using.  There do seem to be different theories regarding the cause of food allergies, or specifically, meat / protein allergies (considering the obvious offenders have been removed, e.g, corn, soy, wheat, grains) in some cats.  Over exposure, as you mentioned, to a single protein over an extended period of time is one theory.  Denatured versus undenatured proteins is another theory - some cats cannot tolerate any kind of processed, e.g., chicken kibble, canned chicken or even homemade cooked chicken but do fine on raw chicken. Others can't handle any chicken, processed or raw, which might suggest a genetic component to the allergy. Leaky gut syndrome is another theory - there is an interesting article on feline-nutrition.org re: allergies in cats, and "rebalancing the immune system" since "70% of the immune system is in the gut."

H&G pork does not contain duck liver although other formulas do, such as their rabbit. Their use of gums though are high up on their ingredient list, gums can cause digestive upset in some cats. Nature's Variety's Instinct line is gum free. If you shake a can of their food, it sounds soupy but when served, it's not soupy.

Lotus Just Juicy makes a canned, shredded pork that my cats love. It's pretty basic in terms of ingredients. The only ones I am not thrilled about are the potato starch and agar-agar. No other meats.
