Strange aggressive behavior toward her brother.

I have 2 cats, they are about 4 years old, litter mates and stay inside a lot. They are both fixed, and are up to date on their shots. I have a caged in porch they go out onto because my neighborhood isn't safe for outdoor cats. They have had tussles before, but nothing like this.

Tonight the female, Gloria, attacked her brother, Jack, and has been displaying frighteningly aggressive behavior toward him.

The first incident took place at about 8:30 pm, they had been on the porch and I was lying down. I heard an awful noise and found them both yowling and bristled. I thought a strange animal had come into the yard, coyotes are present in our area, but then the two of them began fighting. I had to separate them for about 30 minutes and afterward Gloria was fine.

It is now 11:28 and about ten minutes ago she began growling, bristling, and hissing at Jack once more, so I separated them again.

The second time, I had burned chocolate in the microwave so I don't know if the smell triggered it, or if something is wrong. Please help!

How are things now?

I know this kind of thing can be so distressing!  it sounds to me like it could be redirected aggression.  You may never know what set them off the first time. And the first time could be what caused the second.  If it continues; you might have to go for longer separations.  And in some cases; reintroduction is necessary.

This article might have some useful information for you: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/re-directed-aggression-in-cats.  Hopefully things have settled down for you all!

She's calmed down alot, I was nervous leaving them alone yesterday while I went to classes, but everything was OK, I came home and they were snuggled up together on my bed, so I think everything has worked out.

Gloria has always been kind of flighty, especially around visitors and strange animals, maybe she just got a whiff of something he didn't recognize and got scared.

Thanks so much for your advice. I hope this was an isolated incident, but if it happens again I will know what to do!

Oh that's good news!  Sometimes cats need longer than others to calm down after something like that.  I really hope it was an isolated incident!

Funny; my "soul" kitty was named Glory and she was flighty too.
