Our "Little Guy" seems to be progressing very well and I think it's safe to say he's going to be ok. He now has a name! Sukhi in the Bengali language means "blessed"...which he truly is! why a Bengali name?... I dunno, Bengal...tiger... Gives him a goal to try for, haha. He's eating more aggressively with his siblings. He won't push anyone out of the way to nurse but he
will keep looking until he finds a nipple not being used by someone else. Since he seems to be nursing without any problems, his bottle feedings are less frequent but his weight is closely watched. He has big feet to be so small!
While Sukhi seems to be the star, the rest of the siblings are doing great! It amazes me how fast they grow and change. Most of them are starting to get darker noses and ears and they are beginning to look Siamese. They are very active and have powerful little voices! It's funny to see them with Mama's milk on their little chins after a meal.
Saia is settling into motherhood nicely. She devotes most of her time to caring for her babies and has an occasional walk while they're sleeping. She likes to play under blankets and chase invisible things. She seems to be extremely young. She no longer acts confused by her little babies. She keeps them close all the time and grooms them, loves them and does all the things good mamas do.
Good job little Sukhi, he does have big paws doesn't he? Hope he grows into them, he'll really look like a tiger if he does. I've heard that pointed kittens are born all white and their points darken as they grow up. It will be interesting to watch how these little ones grow.
The pointed kittens I took in a few years ago are really dark now, I can't believe how much they've changed when I look back at old photos of them.
Our eyes are open!
They squint from the camera flash, but they have teeny round blue eyes. They don't seem to focus yet but their little world just got a lot bigger! They all stay close together and they scoot around. Saia is enjoying her babies and no longer seems to wonder what these little creatures are. She's protective of them, she stays close to them when I change their blankets. They are getting sweeter every day and purr loudly!
If I could, I would keep them all! That's the bittersweet part...glad to have been there to help Saia and her babies and getting all attached to them, then knowing when to let go so they can have the best chance for a great life in their forever homes. I've been thinking about this before they were born and after they were born an I saw how adorable they are, it's very tempting to keep one of the babies. My youngest car is 9 years old, my oldest is 17. I considered keeping Saia because we have a special bond and she trusted me. Time will tell! If I keep every cat I help, I'd be overflowing with them!
The decision is in! The last kitten waiting for adoption will stay with me
...then Mom saaid, "But won't he be lonely by himself?" Good thinking, Mom!
Make that- the last TWO kittens will be ours!! This really makes my heart smile! Mom is bedridden most of the time. I brought a pair of kittens for her to enjoy for a few minutes. She noticed how soft and fluffy they are...I think her heart melted just a bit! I have a feeling she will choose Simon, just a hunch
I'm amazed by their daily progress. They're triple in size now and growing like crazy. I know they're nursing well. When they're late, Mama Saia gets full. They are starting to get curious and wander but still stay close to Saia. She keeps her babies spotlessly clean. She's a good mama kitty.
Mama Saia is doing well...so are her babies! They're learning the coordination of their legs and feet and are taking their first steps and stumbles. They come to me when I call them. Sukhi acts like any other young kitten and does everything normally, he's been blessed with kangaroo feet so I suppose he'll be a champion jumper someday.
As loving and attentive as Saia is, her motherhood skills need improving! She seems to think her babies are her toys. Silly Saia carries her babies around and leaves a few over here and a few over there and deposits them in the strangest places. She will spend a hour moving them all to a pile then she chooses another place to stash them. She usually keeps one with her. She climbs over her kitten corral fence and takes the babies out one by one. It's a 5 ' drop and that's a hard landing when theyre only 2" long (I'm concerned may have a dislocated hip or broken back legs.). She was too busy playing all day to feed her babies. They were crying for food and her teats were swollen and full. I'll have to keep her under closer observation. She can ignore their cries when they cry for her but if I disturb a baby and it cries she's all over that to see what's going on. Saia is very young and she plays too rough with her babies. I fixed her a large penned in area but she gets out instantly. She will climb the sides with a baby in her mouth and its a long drop to the other side. She keeps me guessing what she will do next!
