Our cat Peter was rushed to the vet last night.  He was acting strangely and not urinating in the litter box, it came on so suddenly.  The vet had a family emergency and had to leave town.  We picked up Peter this morning after his overnight stay as we were told we could pick him up and wait for lab work or keep him there until the vet returned.  We assumed he had a UTI.  We received a call from the tech that Peter has kidney failure.  I called a few hours hour ago in tears paging the vet saying he's dying, not drinking, urinating and when he tries to stand up, he can't walk and falls over.  My heart is broken.  The vet is out of town and my daughter who just had a brain tumor removed has been laying on the couch with him for the last few hours watching his condition worsen.  The only other closest vet is 3 hour away from us.  I'm heartbroken and don't know what to do but keep trying to give him water and pet him, my daughter is laying covered up the two of them as I speak.  His breathing is labored and his eyes roll back, I talk to him and it takes a good half minute for his eyes to focus on me.  I don't know what to do!  :(

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Can you take him to the Vet 3 hours away tomorrow? If it is feasible, I would take him. I think you need a Vet to evaluate him and see what is going on. I know it's very stressful. Try to stay calm.

I'm sorry about your daughter too. You're dealing with a lot. Sending you lots of :heart4: and :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Is Peter still hanging in there?  Was the Vet able to at least get some fluids in him?  Kidney failure is normally a slow decline.  But it depends on what brings it on.  If it's caused by them drinking anti-freeze or some other toxin like that, then it can certainly be fatal, quickly.

What are Peter's lab values as far as BUN, Creatanine, Potassium?  It sounds like he's possibly low on Potassium and that might be causing his balance issues, plus dehydration.  The Vet Tech should be able to give him fluids, I would think.  Low Potassium is easily fixed.  Then kidney Disease is normally managed with a change in diet and administering fluids at home and adding supplements to either their diet or via pills.   I am on my third kidney cat.  My 2nd one lived for 3 ears after being diagnosed at age 12.  My current one is on year 2 after being diagnosed at age 14.  (the  first one was so long ago I honestly don't recall the pertinents
)

Try to stay calm (if possible) and if you can get him thru this crisis, know it's not necessarily an immediate death sentence

BTW Hope your daughter is ok too.

FYI, here is a great site with lots of wonderful information on feline kidney disease that might help answer specific info on the disease:  http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm
