A very close friend of mine, lost one of his dogs today.  Zach has had Bella since she was 63 days old.  She was 10. He has another dog, Cody as well.  Both, are Rat Terriers. I had the pleasure of getting to know both of them and each were incredibly smart and sweet pups.  Most important, both are registered companion dogs.  Zach, has been living with HIV for gosh, I can't even remember how long now?  30 years maybe?  The dogs have been his companion, and his savior in so many ways.

Anyway, Bella was diagnosed suddenly about a month ago with end stage renal failure.  My friend went to large measure to keep Bella going but, she was having seizures nearly daily in addition to a host of other problems (let alone, he lives in a 5th floor walkup in San Francisco so taking her down for walks 10-15 times a day to pee was becoming somewhat overwhelming for him, considering his own health).

Last night, Bella made it clear she was ready to go.  I just read the most heart wrenching memorial/tribute/story about her last moments.  I know everyone here can understand the deep sorrow he feels.

I am at a loss how to honor Bella.  I know he appreciated the words I shared with him a few days ago but I'd like to send a gift of some sort.  Just not sure what's appropriate.  Any ideas?  Totally open to suggestions - just nothing food related.  I would like something which memorializes the dog.

Thanks all.  Hug your kitties and puppies tonight.  I know, I am.

Make a donation in Bella's name to a San Francisco organization that trains companion dogs and matches them to people who need them. Include a brief note that explains how helpful Bella was to your friend, his name. and address. They'll send an acknowledgement to him. It makes something good come from his loss.

When I lost my soul mate cat in 2005, my best friend gave me a hibiscus bush. She told me plant it near my back porch so I could see it when I sat there. Then she told me name it the Max Tree. We did, and ten years later we enjoy it still. Just a suggestion.

Thanks all.

Catapualt you hit it!  Since he lives in an apartment, he has no way to plant anything in her memory.  I'm big on donations to good causes in general so I'm going to go ahead and take your suggestion.

FYI just to update if anyone ever needs to make a donation in that area, I found PAWS, which is Pets Are Wonderful Support,  that concentrate on those who lack the financial or physical abilities living with serious illness, most specifically HIV/AIDS.  They are a resource for companion animal food, vet care, dog walking, transportation, foster care, grooming, education and case management.

Thanks again for the wonderful suggestion.
