Rick says he's going to forbid me from getting on Pinterest.

We live in a bilevel and we are looking at new front doors and a nice storm door. The entrance isn't real big; we can't install a double door or anything like that. Well, we could, but it means cutting into the brick around the area and I'm not sure we want to do that. Anyway, I'm looking at a door with one side highlight and a highlight above the door. Then up on the wall above the front door area, I'm thinking of a large rectangular window installed. That window would go the length of the front door and highlight and probably be able 3 feet tall, give or take. That's doable, I think. 3 x 5 feet, maybe. This would be more toward the fall, not right now.

On the inside, in the foyer, I'd like to put up a nice shelf between the top of the door and the bottom of the window. I could put some doodads or whatever on the shelf, change them around a bit, esp during the holidays. I think it would look OK. Rick isn't so sure. Right now we have this huge blank space of a wall from the top of the front door to the ceiling and, since it's a bilevel, that's a lot of blank space. Putting in a window (no drapes or anything like that!) would give a bit of interest, esp with a shelf there. And since we face south (and that wall gets hot), it would add some heat to the foyer, even in the winter. If we had a decent storm door, we could open the front door on all but the very coldest/dreariest of winter days and the sun would shine directly in the storm door.

And then put up another shelf over the basement door, although that might be overkill.

We are also wondering if the cats (OK, Mollipop) could manage to jump from the living room floor to that shelf. If so, then they'd probably kill themselves trying to get back off the shelf. And whatever they could knock off the shelf in the process. That could be ugly. Mollipop has already shown us that she can easily balance herself on the top of the stair railing along the end of the living room at the stairs, so it's literally a hop, skip, and a jump from the top of the railing to any shelf. And again, Mollipop could probably hop from a step on the stairs going up into the living room to a shelf above the basement door, too. I wouldn't put it past Tabby to try that as well.

Any ideas on a shelf above the front door? I saw some pictures and I really liked them. Rick is undecided. And then, there's that Molli-girl who thinks she's indestructible.

Actually, I did try. But it keeps saying that the link is blocked or something. Must mean it can't be shared.

Here's what I'm trying to describe:
With our foyer, I think it would work well, although it would be on a smaller scale.

Beautiful!

It's a great idea and doable if you're using a professional to do the work.  It requires opening up the entire area, reframing, etc.  But, it probably can be done if you have the top and side clearance available.

Oooh that's lovely! Really lets the light in and gives a sense of it being bigger. But I share your concern about Mollipop not being able to get down. Do you have space for another shelf lower down that you could leave empty for her?

Or attach some shelves to the side wall,  in a step pattern going up the wall to the shelf.

It looks really nice. How would you get up there to dust? Maybe you could make cat shelving that is strong enough for you to climb up there with your duster?

Telescoping duster :D

They make them where one piece slides into the other. You can reach ridiculous heights when they are fully extended.  I had one for my last house, which had incredibly high ceilings in most rooms.  Worked great to clean ceiling fans, woodwork, etc.  Never needed to climb on anything.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking....like a longer Swiffer-type thing. I can keep it fairly clean, I think.

As for Molli, some kind of kitty shelving might work for her to get up and down. I just have a feeling that with a sunny window right there, that might be a good place for a nap (kitty-thinking, that is). I know what's going to happen. We'll put a shelf up and put a lip on the shelf. I'll see her up there and think, "You know, I should probably put a pillow there." And before I even know what hit me, it's a new kitty bed.
(Do I know my furkids? Yup.)

Yep, pretty much every flat surface in my place has been devoted to the kitties. I used to have ornaments and photos in frames and other such frippery around. Not any more. It's all got none-slip carpet tiles and cat beds on it now.

:lol3: Norachan and Winchester. I have to add...one of the main reasons we bought our current house was that it has massive windowsills (1 ft deep) for the cats to sunbathe on. No prizes for guessing who rules here too.

Wow, a foot deep! My cats would be in heaven.

I have a GF who remodeled their house and the first thing she told her contractor was that the windowsills have to be "wide enough for kitty butts".
