That's odd. Our old Animal has places for pretty much everything, except the bigger stuff...we just keep the stuff in the closet. Did your new one come with a manual? I see some kind of paper there on the floor. Can you google about it.

Mine is the DC40. It doesn't have a place to hold all the attachments like your old one, but the wand itself attaches to the back of the vacuum (the red long rod-like thing on the left, in your first picture) with the handle-looking thing (the triangle thingy on top of the quick assembly paper).

Ours is a DC43 and the extension wand fits into the handle, so it's easy to pull up and out to use. The other tools are not attached.

Is that the handle on the floor? Ours came fully assembled.

I know about the extension wand.  I have the vacuum put together and have tried it out already. My question is about the basic small tools and how my old one had places to store them on the vacuum, while this new one doesn't. Guess that answers my question.  I'm rather disappointed that they removed the tool storage areas from the vacuum. There really was no reason for them having changed the design to remove that feature.  There looks like there is plenty of room still for the feature to have been kept.

I also had to assemble much of mine.  The main part consisting of the ball, dirt canister and handle were one piece. I had to put on the floor attachment and everything else.

I found a picture on the internet showing how it came out of the box:
