My cat has had an ongoing problem with her ear.  I took her to a new vet and the vet said she had an infection of the middle ear and put her on Orbax liquid antibiotic and Gentizol ear ointment.  So I have been treating her the last 2 days and while she seems to be her normal self and I don't see her shaking her head,  she won't eat.  I broke down last night and opened a can of tuna and she ate a small amount of that but she won't eat her normal food.  Since she has had the ear issue,  she has been very picky and I have to coax her to eat (forti flora, tuna flakes, etc).  Any suggestions on getting her to eat?  Does the Orbax make her nauseous or is it the ear infection?

It's probably the antibiotic.  Another possibility since the ear and nose are so interconnected she may be having issues with smelling the food.  A kitty won't eat what she can't smell,  You could try warming the food to amp up the smell.  You could also try a particularly stinky food.  The last food my kitty would quit eating was the Meow Mix cups.  I know they aren't a good quality food but the important thing is calories.  You could also try plain meat baby food, the ones without garlic or onion.  A last resort would be syringe feeding..  No fun but it gets calories in. Use the side of the mouth and go slow.  Just a little food at a time and give her time to swallow it.

Since it's her middle ear, her balance might be off when she drops her head down to eat.  Try elevating her food dish up on a stack of books.  Also, get some plain pate Fancy Feast canned food from the grocery store.  Add a touch of water to it and warm it up in a water bath or in the microwave (for less than 10 seconds). Sometimes warming up the food makes the aroma stronger and will entice them to eat.  Lastly, try steaming her in the bathroom to help open up any congested nasal passages.  Get the bathroom nice and steamy, then sit in the bathroom with her until the steam dissipates.
