I purchased a trial-sized bag of Nature's Variety Instinct raw boost dry cat food from PetSmart today. It advertises 'real freeze dried raw inside'. My question is, will this food need to be refrigerated? Consumed a week after opening?

I have recently become more well informed about cat nutrition and have since introduced canned foods (Wellness Core and Blue Buffalo, playing with brands/ flavors to see what my cats favor). My 14 year old male quickly decided he enjoyed wet food, but my 7 year old female will not touch any of the wet foods I've tried. She won't even eat her dry food if it's on the same plate as wet. As I persist in attempting to get her to eat the wet, I thought it couldn't hurt to purchase a higher quality dry. Hence Nature's Variety Instinct raw boost dry cat food.

If anyone has any advice, I'd welcome it.

If this is the NV kibble with the raw boost pieces then it should not have to be refrigerated ..   Have you tried Fancy Feast Classics ? My cats are pretty picky with wet foods and they love FF ..

No, it does not need to be retrigerated at all
Freeze dried raw is shelf stable. The NV dry food with the freeze dried raw can be consumed until the bag is empty, or until the "best by" date on the bag (do dry foods have such a date? It's been years since I fed dry food).

Some cats like texture in their food. Try Fancy Feast to start. It's inexpensive and available nearly everywhere. Plus most cats like it. There is nothing wrong with feeding a brand like Fancy Feast. The most important thing is that your cat will eat it. For something higher quality, try Tiki Cat or any of the Weruva foods or Soulistic or the Nature's Variety Pride by Instinct.

No there is no "best by" date but there is a "sell by" date. I just wasn't sure if this information was missing because it was a trial sized bag.

Thank you both for your help! I'm going to put a little in my cats bowl now and see if she eats it. I'm glad to have an answer to my question about whether the food was shelf stable.
