Hello everyone. My older neighbor who I only talked to a few times left me her cat.She knew I am a pet lover and would give love and care for her cat.Thats fine and I am attached to the cat and vice versa now. Anyways I was told she has had crystals in the past. I have always had cats and this is the first time for me with this. I do not know what to look for. do I keep her on her S/O dry. I have called the cats older vet but they will not give me any info until a family member on record puts me down as a contact. I am also waiting for my vet to get back from vacation and have her do a check up but till then I am lost. I have water bowls all over the house and she is drinking and no problems using the boxes. No yowling in pain when she goes.As I am typing this she is playing with a toy after a week of watching the other cats play with them

Can you ask the old vet if a copy of the will (assuming there was one) would be sufficient?

Do you know what she was eating before you got her? While I personally have as strong bias for wet food over dry,  assuming that her old food was controlling the problem, I would probably just leave her on whatever that was.

If she's been on the s/o dry and been well on it I'd be reluctant to make an abrupt change. I believe that wet food is better, especially in crystals cases, and would look at introducing some wet alongside the dry. Watered down wet would be even better, as it will boost hydration further. I have a crystals cat who eats 70% standard wet food and 30% s/o dry. He's had no problems since his initial bout several years ago.

The biggest thing to look for in flutd cats is the urine output. This is best observed with clumping litter. Big clumps mean everything's fine, lots of little clumps mean there's a problem. These articles should help:-

Thank you so much. I clean the boxes twice a day and always big clumps. From what I understand she has been on the dry S/O for a couple years. And never any wet food. I gave her some baby food with some water mixed in the third day she moved in with us as a comfort treat or bribe to let me pet her. I have filtered water for her in everyroom and have a fountain on the way. I am reading up more on it to educate myself better. Thank you again .
