So my 9 month old kitten has been having bad diarrhea issues with Diamond Naturals kitten dry food, so we have decided to try Purina One smartblend kitten dry food instead, we are slowly changing it as we don't want to cause a bigger problem.  My question is did anyone else use Purina One with great results, specifically for diarrhea?  We have brought him to the vet and all tests came out negative, so we are thinking its diet related.  Before bringing him to the vets once again we wanted to try things at home ourselves first (please don't judge as the vet's is getting pricy every visit).  He is acting find otherwise, he's a very happy kitty, he's still drinking, eating and purring away daily!

Just want what's best for him without needing to jump back to the vet each time.  Thanks

p.s: also keep in mind that I live in Canada therefor we don't have all brands out there and I'm trying to keep it price friendly as well.

What all has the vet tested for? Just basic parasites (worms, coccidia) or has more specialized fecal testing been done (fecal sent to outside lab to test for Giardia, Tritrichamonas, etc...)?

When diet is thought is be the problem, the first thing to try is a grain-free and soy-free food. If this doesn't solve the problem, then try a canned-only diet (still avoiding grains and soy). If this doesn't completely solve the problem, try a limited ingredient, single protein canned food.

Trying to determine a food allergy/intolerance can be time consuming, but so worth it in the end!

The only thing my cat would eat for a few months was purina one smartblend Salmon and Tuna but I found out that it has a lot of grain and other stuff in it that isn't great. I decided to switch her off because if it is an allergy, it is likely the grain in the food. The other thing is if you can get them to eat something not fish based, that is best as a lot of fish is bad for them (there is an article here about that). Purina products are sometimes attributed to vomiting. My girl loved it (was actually addicted to it) and it never made her sick so that is a plus along with the price of course. Because she will ONLY eat fish based tasting and I really wanted to get her on grain free, I tried two types but one she refused and the one she is now on (Nature's Recipe) worked well. They both were semi expensive at 15$ for 5 pounds. BUT the thought is that the best food for your cat is what she will eat and doesn't make her sick. There are lots of sites you can get discounted foods on for pets though! So once you find what she works well on you can try to find it cheaper.

It is pretty normal for people here to be supporters of the all wet or raw diet team but its really up to what is best for you. I would recommend giving either a fountain with the dry food or a little wet food as well for the moisture content as it is important for their kidney health. (there is an article on that too)

Thank you, I forgot to mention that he does have wet food twice day, once during lunch about 1.5oz and again at night same amount.  The dry food for in between throughout the day :)

I use Petcurean Go! Which is a Canadian brand. You can get it at Petland. It looked expensive until I read the feeding guidelines and realised that its calorie content was so much higher than Purina that it worked out about the same. I was feeding Purina One before so I can definitely say that the poops got smaller and less smelly on the Petcurean.

I've also heard good things about Acana which is another Canadian brand. And Orijin, though Orijin is more expensive.

For wet I really like Grrreat Choice feom Petsmart because it is cheap and seems to be mostly meat without vegetables or grains.
