I have another question for you- as I keep reading (and now I'm going a little coo-coo with all the new info) ... I read on one of the resources under this forum that nuggets and such are not good for cats because they need to chew and you really need to do raw from the butcher and get the bones and organs and supplements and not even a grinder.  And that vet mentions the fear that they'll end up under anesthesia to clean their teeth.   In your opinion, is that just going overboard?  The fact that frankenprey is cheaper than commercial and even quality wet  (I believe????  Is it??) makes it tempting and now I'm thinking is this butcher thing without a grinder really something that I could do? and of course I question whether I'd be getting into something that truly is healthy for my cat??  I would definitely read up on it before I got into it and I wouldn't even begin to try to do this until the summer, but I'm wondering what you thought about it?

Thank you!

I'm glad you're going to do more research before beginning to feed raw.
I'm not sure what you mean by "nuggets". Dry food is (duh!) hard, but cats tend to swallow hole dry food, so "chewing" dry food doesn't really help with teeth.
In my opinion, it is a really a matter of personal preference whether you feed prey model raw or commercial raw and whether your cat will recognize commercial raw or prey model raw as, well, food. Some people like the security of feeding commercial raw because it is 100% of what cats need. Other people like the convenience and (almost) total control over what their cats eat so feed prey model raw. Some commercial raw products have too much bone or carbs for their cat. Prey model raw does require weighing food to the tenths of a gram and diligence in making sure the cat gets the organs and bones they require.
I started out feeding commercial raw to see if Ritz would eat it, and she loved it. But one or two brands tended to make Ritz constipated; they contained about 10% bone. And buying commercial raw involved scheduling an extra errand every week, plus it was expensive. So after more research, I switched to feeding prey model raw. I can buy the ingredients at most any grocery store, sometimes at 50% off list price, and control the amount of bone (roughly 8%) and carbs (roughly 0%) Ritz eats.
I don't have a grinder--or the patience to be honest to use one. Never wanting to go that route, I don't know the pros/cons. I'm sure someone else can help you with that.

Thank you. The nuggets are the Primal raw frozen nuggets- little loafs.   I would love to not have to do the grinder like you said so I think I would like to do the style you do once I get off the commercial.  I have three 3 pound bags.  I also got a bag of Feline Natural freeze dried today.  My 1 year old cat ate the primal nugget without any "additions" to entice her for the first time today.  I felt encouraged.

You got lucky. Primal went over like a fart in church in my house. I tried the nuggets, the Primal Pronto and the frozen roll. They didn't like any of it. They did like the Stella and Chewy's frozen raw. The Duck, Duck, Goose went over well and the Chick, Chick, Chicken which they liked even better. The Rad Cat chicken is a big hit. They like the turkey also but chicken is the favorite. I also tried the Nature's Variety frozen raw and that one got the worst reception of all. I got a couple of dirty looks and 2 cats leaving the kitchen in a huff as though they were insulted and/or offended by it. The dog ate that one. She loved it but she ate a petrified frog once. She might not be the best judge of what's tasty and what's not.

Sometimes it's the texture of the commercial raw rather than the flavor; at least, that was the case with Ritz.
