Is my cat lonely?

5 and a half months old, SIberian Forest Cat.  We got him neutered a week ago.  Since his neutering he has been meowing at the door and keeps wanting to go out into the hallways of our apartment complex.  We originally discouraged it for 3 days and than after chasing him down the hallway 3-4 times a day we just let him come out with us when we take the garbage out (I am not sure it's important but we also take his scooped litter out when we clean his box out there and put it down the shoot).  Now we let him go out when we do, he circles the hallway a couple times and than comes back in our apartment no fuss (though he will start meowing at the door in 5 minutes until he is tired.  He walks the hallway with his tail up with a question mark, like he is ready to greet a new cat out there.  He sniffs at all the doors and sits by them sometimes even though I know for certain that some of them don't have cats.

Since his neutering as well, it has been harder to get him to play with the wand or laser toy for more than 5 minutes.  He usually flops down (no panting) and just watches me after jumping and being really excited for 5 minutes.  Whereas before he was so excited whenever I took it out of the cupboard and wanted to play a lot.  I thought that maybe he was tired of his feather toys and bought 5 new feathers, he wasn't impressed.  We have set play times, though on days I am home all day he plays more often with me.

He really hasn't been sleeping more, no excessive grooming, he sleeps through the night as far as I know (sleeps with us and is in bed when we wake up), and he's been eating about the same amount.  He really likes when people visit or when we get food delivered will greet them at the door.  He greets us at the door and loves the rub his nose on us.  However, with the neutering he has also gotten upset when we leave and meows at the door (not sure how long he does this).

Is he lonely?  What should we do?  Is this something he will just grow out of?

Does he want another cat?  If so how long can this wait?  We got a siberian because me and my SO are both allergic to cats (we can't just go out to the local human society and get one), it was 7 month wait just for him.  If I could have gone back and done it again I would have said two, but here I am with one.  We love him, but we are both really worried that he is depressed.

Thanks for reading, sorry it's so wordy.

It sounds like he wants more stimulation. Yes, cats often do better with other cats around, but they can be perfectly happy as single cats for the most part.

Two things come to mind: firstly, is it possible to get other attachments for your wand toy? I know there are tons of different options for Da Bird wands...way more than just feathers. Maybe he wants a little more variety - my girl needs frequent toy changes to keep her interested...Sometimes even within one play session

The other thing it sounds like he'd really enjoy is going out for walks on a harness. Some cats naturally want a bigger territory than others - he may well just want more room to explore.
