We got a young kitten last week. (After taking her to the vet we found out that she's younger than we were led to believe.) She was dewormed at the vet. However, after dealing with diarrhea from Thurs through the weekend, I called the vet on Monday asking about her condition. They asked me to bring a stool sample in to be tested for additional worms. That test revealed roundworms. I was given 2 doses of Strongid T to administer to her, one on Mon and the other dose in 10 days. The poor kitten has had diarrhea since Thurs. How much longer can I expect the diarrhea to continue since she's on the meds? I believe the vet said a day or two. Today is going on the 2nd day and her poop doesn't seem to be hardening up any.  (She's eating Purina Kitten Chow as well, not super cheap off brand kitten food.)

How young is she?  Did the vet give her fluids & advise you on how often they are needed?  I would think that she would get better soon but this is really a question for the vet.  Here are the ingredients in Kitten Chow:

Poultry by-product meal, rice flour, corn gluten meal, wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of vitamin E), soybean meal, ground yellow corn, fish meal, brewers dried yeast, animal digest, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, phosphoric acid, salt, choline chloride, taurine, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), riboflavin supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride, citric acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate

This food contains rice, wheat flour &  corn which are not good for kittens at all. Look up poultry by-product meal on the internet. If you must feed dry, look for a kind that has the name of a meat as the first ingredient; chicken, beef, etc.  Look up poultry by-product meal on the internet.  Food changes must be made slowly & not while the kitten is sick.  I use EVO for my foster kittens.  It is more expensive but will really cut down on health problems; now & later.  Plus vet bills are more expensive than food. Don't feel bad about not knowing about food.  I used to feed Kitten Chow to my ferals before I learned about nutrition in cats.

Good luck, I hope you kitten is feeling better soon.

The vet didn't specify how old. I was told the kitten was 8 weeks from the lady we got the kitten from. However, the vet said most kittens gain about a pound per month and considering she weighed only 1.8 pounds, the vet doesn't believe she's 8 weeks old. Mimi (the kitten) drinks water; we keep a bowl of water down for her at all times. She pees in the litterbox several times daily. I'm not thinking dehydration is a concern. (??) But I may buy some. I was concerned that wet food may make her poop more. The vet was the one that recommended a Purina brand of kitten food, over Special Kitty brand from WalMart (which is what I originally bought). The lady said she fed the kittens (she had like 3 litters) 9Lives wet and dry. My store doesn't carry that.

What is EVO?

I would hope the vet would also test for parasites like Giardia and Coccidia which are common and cause diarrhea that can take quite a while to resolve.  The most reliable testing is PCR testing, its not done in house and costs less than $100.  The vet could also do in house testing for less money, and consider treating prophylacticly if they suspected parasites.

When I contacted the vet Mon about the diarrhea, they asked me to bring in a stool sample to run a fecal test. On the phone, the vet technician mentioned possibility of 2 intestinal parasites.  The fecal test came back with roundworms. I was given 2 doses of Strongid T to administer to her; 1 on Monday and the other in 10 days. So I'm assuming Giardia and Coccidia and roundworms are all different....

You are correct, Giardia and Coccidia are different than round worms, and if the diarrhea gets under control than all should be good, but if it doesn't get under control by the last dose of Strongid (which is in my experience usually is given 3 times) then one might need to consider the parasites i mentioned, in house testing for which is not as reliable as outside PCR testing.

The reason strongid is given 3 times, over time, is because it doesn't kill the worms, it instead stops the replication of the worm and until all their life cycles are stopped, the diarrhea continues.
