I don't see why you can't run to a store, how far is it?

Can you bring them inside?

Ok. So she has been gone AT LEAST 4 hours now. It's starting to get dark and will get cold soon. I want to bring them into our heated garage if she's not coming back, but don't want them to be missing if she comes back. Advise please!!

Nearest store that would be open is an hour away. Everything near us is closed at 5:00 on Sunday. (My town is pop. 600).

The only thing I'm missing is gelatin. Would it still work? If they need to be bottle fed, how do I go about finding someone who would take them? We aren't home enough to keep up with their feelings.

Here's what I've done so far.... I made a little concoction the best I could from that website you gave me. (Thanks) and wiped their bums (something I never thought I'd be doing!) Did not think a kitten could go potty that much! I "gave them a bath" and they seemed to be somewhat receptive to me feeding them. Don't get me wrong, they are some unhappy kittens right now, but they were hungry enough to try it. So now my question is how long to feed them (they each ate between 1.25 and 2.5 ml). They seem to be getting settled down again

I don't know how much to feed I think 2ml should be enough but I do know how often, every 3 to 4 hours
How are you feeding them? What position are they in?

I have them flat (like they are bellied up to mom eating) and I'm using a medicine dropper from my baby ibuprofen. I found a shelter that had just found a stray that had a dead kitten and they think she still has milk so we are going to try to unite them in the morning! Fingers crossed! I think it would actually work to bottle them ourselves since my boys are doing really good with them, but my bigger concern is that we can't teach them how to survive outside like their mama could.

If you using a dropper, in do it in cheek

That good on belly, head up

If their mother don't show up in the morning, the stray will be very happy to have them and have kittens to take care of so why not go though with that if it make her happy

Let's hope mama shows up. If she does, I would keep her in the garage with the kittens until they are weaned. But going to a shelter might result in their being placed in good homes rather than a life of constant breeding outdoors.

The kittens will need to eat in the middle of the night. They can go downhill very quickly without regular feedings. Without mama kitty they should have a heating pad under their bedding for warmth. They cannot regulate their body temperature for first 3 weeks. They must be warm to digest their food as well.

Good luck tonight & let us know how it's going & if mama kitty returns!

I was about to suggest that :)

I have just read through this thread.

For starters, kittens must be kept warm, not with blankets, they are unable to hold their body temps and soon will be room temp, they must have an actual heating source, and need to be kept between 97-99 degrees, which is a heating pad on low, with a lightweight towel covering it, not put directly on the pad.

If you don't have a heating pad, fill a couple socks up with rice, knot the top and heat well in microwave, also cover that so it's not directly on them.

They will easily die from hypothermia, getting too cooled down. Also when their temp drops below 95 their organs become dormant, and are unable to digest any formula they take in, it grows bacteria and will die. So be SURE they are not cool before feeding. If their little arms/paws feel cool or cold, they are not warm enough. How you can easily tell if they are warm enough is, they should not feel cool or hot when touched or held against you, as our temps and their are so close. Should feel like touching your own skin.

When fed, they must not be held as a human baby would be, they need to be only on their tummies, tilt the head up slightly, and very carefully put 2 drops in to their cheek area, wait for them to swallow and breathe, it takes time and patience but these babies are extremely fragile.

NOT something the kids should be doing by no means.

One tiny drop inhaled and they get pneumonia and die within a day or so. Period. It's a very big deal, and why fed babies die so often except with either experienced feeders or advice given from an experienced feeder as I am giving now.

I highly suggest googling homemade kitten formula and there are quite a few, look through and find one that has ingredients you already have. I KNOW there is a simple one that is made with evaporated milk.

This is much better than second guessing.

Warmth, feeding, pottying, these are the 3 things they need to be cared for.

If mom comes back, and I don't know why shee wouldn't but you never know if something may happen to her, but close her wandering butt up so she can't do this to you again.

I agree, if a rescue will take them, it's a much better future for them.

Good luck! I'm not going anywhere so I will watch for updates.

I think I'm doing everything ok so far. Just added the sock of rice to their kennel. They felt pretty warm. How much should they potty? Couldn't believe how much they went #1! (All over me!)
