Hi! all,

I am the new kid on the block and I found your forum after losing my cat Tails April 20. I've been a cat mom for over 40 years and no matter how many times I've been through this it never gets any easier.

I found Tails in my front yard eating dried grass about 10 years ago. I saw him as I was leaving for work, started to drive to work, turned around and went back home to feed him. I quickly tossed some dried cat food on the front door step and left for work. I called my husband and said we had a new cat and I would find him a good home. Of course hubby knew the good home would be here and we welcomed a scrawny fluffy black cat. Our kids named him Tails after an anime character.

Tails spent most of his days outside and preferred to sleep in the garage where he had his kitty beds, food, water and litter box. He also had food and water in the house and plenty of places to sleep inside the house. Tails would spend his days outside with brief visits to see his family during the early morning and evening hours.

During his later years he would spend more time with me and loved to sit in my lap while I watched TV at night. Before we headed off to bed he'd want to be let out to the garage where he'd spend the night. I'd try to keep him inside during the cold winter nights but he preferred sleeping in the garage.

Tails was a quiet cat who rarely meowed. He never demanded much from us and loved just hanging out around the house.

Last week I noticed he was sleeping more and not eating much. I called the vet to have him seen this coming Friday. Over the weekend, after I kept inside the house to observe him, I noticed he was having difficulty eating so I made up some chicken gruel and bought him some canned food that I thinned down with water. I tried to feed him both the gruel and canned food and he ate a bit of it. Saturday night Tails looked particularly weak so I upped the feeding schedule of gruel and he perked up by Sunday. I called the vet Monday and got him into the vet Monday morning.

Before Tails was seen by the vet on Monday, we sat in the examining room where I cradled Tails in my arms belly up, and he purred. It was a lovely time as Tails purred loudly and we spent those few minutes bonding as he would look directly into my eyes and purr. I will never forget those lovely moments together as it was a beautiful time as I cradled Tails in my arms like a newborn baby with Tails cuddled against my heart.

The vet did a thorough exam and said Tails had intestinal cancer. I asked if Tails was suffering and the vet said yes. I had Tails put down Monday morning.

I'm doing better and I thank Tails for his trust and love he shared with all of us. Tails spent about 10 years with us and was of an unknown age when he passed. At a good guess he was about 12 years old but we will never know.

Thanks for reading my post.

I forgot to add Tails will probably be my last cat as I am allergic to both cats and dogs. My allergist would be happier if I didn't have either. I'll hang out here and enjoy reading and hopefully helping others with their cat ownership.

I am so sorry for your loss.  You  gave this stray kitty a home and love on his terms and then released him from his illness..  You are right, it never gets easier.  I sometimes wonder why we keep doing it when we know how it will end but I can't imagine my life without a kitty and/or dog,

Sending you some big hugs. I understand exactly how you feel. We lost a 14 year old cat to cancer in 2013. We have an 11 year old cat now with nasal cancer. We have decided, like you, that when this last cat is gone, we are not having anymore. So, yes, it is hard. Your cat knew how much you loved him. He had a wonderful home and family. I hope you find peace and comfort and rest in the knowledge that your cat loved you too.,

So sorry for your loss. Tails was lucky to have found such a wonderful home. It takes so much courage to make that final decision, and I know how had it is.

Tails sounds like a wonderful cat. He knew you wanted the best for him - those final bonding moments are proof of that. Maybe he was trying to say 'thank you, I love you' before he passed.

Rest in peace, beautiful boy :rbheart:

Agreed. It never gets any easier but I try to focus on the happy times and not the sad ones. I've never been with any of my pets when they are put down as I want to remember them as happy and healthy. I also don't want to stress my fur babies either and I would if I were in the room. Dare I digress. It's been pretty lonely here without any critters under foot. I still have Tails food dishes out and his kitty beds too. I guess I'll get rid of his litter box today as it's trash day tomorrow. I keep pretending there is a cat here even if there is not. Silly I know but it provides me with a little comfort.

Thanks so much for your lovely condolences.

I am so sorry you are dealing with cancer blueeyedgirl. It's so tough but you are hanging in there and offering plenty of love and care to your fur baby. Thank you too for writing the perfect words that helped bring solace to my aching heart.

I am sorry for your loss of Tails.  It was kind that you took him in & gave him a good life.  Saying goodbye is very hard but we have to do what is best for them.  I lost my beautiful black & white kitty on Jan. 19 to intestine cancer as well.  I knew for 9 months or so that something was going wrong but refused to believe it.  As soon as he was in discomfort & I knew he wanted to go I had the vet come over.  Like your kitty he was young, just 13, and you think you have many years left.  After they are gone you still expect to see them in all their favorite places.  Be at peace that you gave him a great gift by by caring for him & not letting him suffer alone at the end.

RIP Little Tails!

Thank you for your kind words Riley1. Tails was put down when I was not present. I have never been with any of my pets when they were put down as it's too hard on me. I also like to remember my pets as what they looked like when they were alive and healthy. Every person has to deal with this decision in their own way.

I did give Tails lots of love before he was taken to the back and he was relaxed and happy. In fact, our final moments together were happy and loving and I will always remember what we shared.

I'm sorry your lost your kitty on January 19th. You are a loving kitty mom to take take of your fur baby in such a loving way.
