Big pee puddles

One of my kittens (the skinnier of the two) is leaving really big pee puddles in the box. They're about 2-3 times larger than her sister's. Both kittens are healthy according to the vet (checked and vaccinated today) and ahead on their growth -- they are days shy of 8 weeks and both around 2.5 pounds. Is the size of the pee puddles anything to be concerned about? She's not quite as bouncy and vivacious as her sister, but this might come down to temperament. She eats well, and was actually the larger of the two (by almost 40 grams) at birth. For what it's worth, there was a period of time during which her Mom was leaving oceans of pee in the box. (Her pee puddles are now much smaller than they used to be.) Could it be something genetic?

Have you talk to the vet about it?

I didn't think to mention it to the vet this morning. I noticed the size of the puddle again this evening -- have seen a few big ones out of her previously though.

It's highly unlikely for her to have kidney issues at this point of age, I would say very likely nothing to worry about, and probably just the various size and how full her bladder gets before it tells her she needs to go.

You can always give the vet a call and let him know how you feel and if there is anything to be concerned about, just to ease your mind at least.

Does she seem to drink a lot of water?  That may account for it.  The two biggest medical risks associated with large urine output are kidney issues and diabetes, both highly unlikely as @catwoman707   said above.  Did you discuss this with the vet today?

I haven't noticed her drinking any more water than her sister. In fact, I haven't noticed her drinking water at all.... But she may be nursing more than her sister still. I definitely see her going for the teats more often. Thanks for reassuring me catwoman707 and stephenQ. I am a bit neurotic when it comes to my kitties! I'll keep an eye on her and phone the vet if I see too many more enormous puddles. We also had some runny poos but I don't know who did those and they both happened after I fed a particular food, which I'm not feeding them any more. I've just been a bit worried about her because she does seem pretty skinny despite her weight and sleeps more than her sis.

Could kitten possibly have small kidney, or lacking one? I don't know how that affects urine out put, but does seem to be a topic on the Big Tent kidney group through Tanya's kidney site, which might discuss that as kidney issue. Just a thought1

Late to the party again.  Everyone has already said what I would have mentioned.  It could be that she goes twice as much but half as often, or that her sister had the runny poo and passed some of her fluid intake that way.  Just keep an eye on it, and make sure there is plenty of water available to them at all times.

I concur with what already's been said.  I will tell you, though, that my smallest kitty has the largest pee puddles.  I don't know if she learned that when she was living on her own, or if it's just how she is.  My biggest kitty (my little boy who weighs in at 13 lbs) has the tiniest pee puddles.

I think that cats are like people.  Some bladders can hold more and some have TWB (teeny weeny bladder).  I would just watch her and if anything changes, then be concerned.  Also, watch her water intake.  Any change there might also indicate something to be concerned about.

Thanks for replying guys. I wouldn't have thought much of it except that I saw huge puddles from her Mom at one point too, which is why I wondered about genetics. That's an interesting thought about the kidney. Anyway, the kitten is still making big puddles but otherwise there are no signs anything is wrong. She's bouncing around playing with her sister and has a good appetite. I think she's just a bit laid back compared to her sister, who is more mischievous and plays more roughly. She's still really skinny but I think she might just have her Mom's frame. (Long-boned and light.) She has to see a vet again before going to her new home (via a strictly no-kill rescue) so perhaps I'll mention it then.
