My cat had a blockage and could not go pee and had to go to he vets for three days, and now is home and he needs to be on a prescription diet of only canned for two weeks and then maybe some dry. I cannot get him to eat the food I have tried science diet and now royal cannine and he will not eat them. I am worried because in order for him to eat any of these and then it is a small amount it take about twenty-four hours for him to give in.  Any suggestions I am desperate as he is getting skinner.

We had trouble getting our one cat to eat wet food as he's a kibble addict. What works for us is sprinkling "toppers" on top of the wet food. Once he starts eating them, he'll usually eat most of the wet food too.
We've used: Fortiflora, crumbled Temptations treats and freeze-dried chicken breast.
I hope you find something that helps. Our other cat blocked a few times, but he adjusted to a wet diet quickly (thank goodness) and has been OK ever since.

I think you will like Forti-Flora.   Our vet recently recommended it, and it's pretty awesome.   It increased my boy's appetite, his coat became shinier, he put on weight -- it's supposed to help the immune system too.   Good luck!!    :)

as someone in another thread suggested, you can crush some of the dry food that you know he likes and use it as a topper (if the fortiflora doesn't work).

I used the Fortiflora this morning and he licked the top of the food but didn't eat much, is it normal for cats to lose their appetite after this. He also was trying to throw up a day after he came home once and then the next day also, but only liquid came out, thats when he really started to not eat much at all. I told the vet and after I stopped that food he didn't do that anymore, just concerned about no appetite.

I had real trouble getting my cat to eat after a bad time with crystals. Even when he was at the vets, I was having to go in every day to feed him as they couldn't get him to eat.

The way I got him eating was to take the wet food piece by piece and hand feed. Often, I'd have to start by smearing the gravy on his tounge, or even placing a tiny bit of food into his mouth. It means each meal take s long time, but sometimes it's the only way.

You might find that being more generous with the fortiflora helps - mix some into the food to get the flavour evenly spread, the top with a little more to kick start his appetite. As long as you don't go over the amount recommended for probiotic use there shouldn't be a problem. Once he's eating again, you can gradually reduce the quantity of fortiflora if you want to.

Warming the food a little to bring out the aroma could help too. If all else fails, start him eating with a couple of bites of chicken, turkey...whatever 'human' meat he likes best. That might be enough to make him realise he's actually hungry!

If the first urinary diet made him nauseous, that could also account for his lack of interest in food. Fingers crossed that the royal canin agrees with him better.

Lastly, it really would be advisable to keep him on all wet if you possibly can. The more water he has in his system the lower the chance of another flare. Hope he recovers soon :vibes:

Thanks for the help ! I went upstairs this morning with more food for him it was his old food though, trying to get him to eat something.  I put the Fortiflora on top, and rubbed some on his nose, which got him to start eating and he ate about a tablespoon which is good. I know its not the right food for him but at least he ate. Will be trying the vet food later and he cannot have any dry food they said so it is all wet. Thanks for all the help keeping my fingers crossed too!!

I'm glad he's eating again. Maybe you'll be able to get him onto wet food as he get better. In the meantime, it's really important to boost his fluids intake as much as possible - even more vital since he's only eating dry right now. The best way to do this is to make him some flavoured water to entice him - I find water from poaching skinless chicken or turkey breast works great. Just remember not to add any seasonings. The meat can be treats for him, or you can keep it for yourself. The other surefire flavour is tuna water (cover some drained tuna - be sure it's not the kind in brine - in water and let it sit for a couple of hours. Remove the tuna and offer the soaking water). This article has some more options too http://www.thecatsite.com/a/tips-to-increase-your-cat-s-water-intake

Hope Cody continues to improve :vibes:
