Hi all,

My boy Binx just got home from the vet; I had noticed he seemed to be having trouble either pooping or peeing - couldn't tell which.   With multiple cats in the household and multiple boxes, it's very hard to monitor who's doing what.  But today, after I had totally cleaned all boxes, I noticed that Binx went in (isn't that just what they like to do, wait until after you clean them  :)    so I figured I'd go ahead and scoop that out too - but nothing was in there.   And then he came back and went to another box - still the same.   I watched him go back and forth numerous times and whatever he was trying to do was not producing any result.  Because I lost a cat a few years ago to acute renal failure, I am super paranoid about my male cats now, so off to the vet we went.  Best case scenario I thought would be that he was constipated from the appetite stimulant he started having to take -- I was super worried.  Turns out that he had no bowel blockage, no bladder blockage, and no UTI.   But the vet said his penis was very irritated and he put him on antibiotics and pain medication -- but I'm so very curious as to what would make his penis that irritated.  I'm pretty OCD about keeping the boxes clean, but could the litter itself have caused the irritation?   I'm so very relieved that there was no blockage, but I'm curious about what might have caused it and if there's anything I can do to prevent it in the future.  Anyone have any ideas about this or had this experience?   Thank you so much!!

Nature's Miracle clumping.   It's one of the more expensive ones, but with four cats, I've found it helps keep the odor down more and lasts about twice as long.   :)   Do you have any better recommendations concerning litter?    And thanks for the tip about the hair -- I do not know -- but I will certainly check this out!

Thank you!!

Hi can you give me an update on your cat Binx's penis irritation? How did it end up going away? I have been back and forth to vets over the last 2 months and nobody can help? He has no blockages and his urine always comes back neg and clear and his urine culture comes back negative too. His penis is very purple, the vet says it is darker now than the last 2x.....xrays and ultrasounds come back normal..thanks

Hi, did you ever get answers for this? My cat has the exact same issue and I’ve had multiple vets look at him with no answers. No urinary/bladder infection or blockages.

yes he was diagnosed with flutd, which means they really do not know the answer. Some vets thought his penis was normal and it was just his pigment and others thought it was irritated. We ended up putting him on hills c/d wet food and I mix about .7 ounces of water in with each can. They make a wet food with stress and one without. THe one with stress works better for him. It seems to have helped him alot. On days when he acts up, I mix in a little more water. Avoid dry food, the more water , the more he flushes out. I check his urine monthly and still never an infection or crystals etc.
Hope that helps

There is a condition called idiopathic cystitis that cats get. It’s an inflammation of the bladder without an infection. Some cats may lick their penis excessively. Treatment is pain relief and reduction of any stress the cat may be under.
