The title pretty much sums it up: I've got an awkward flower bed.

Moved into this home a year and a half ago, and I didn't give too much thought to this flower bed at the time. But this year I've got plans.

Before I commence with those plans, I just want to know...can anything be done for this flower bed shape?

(Pardon the camera focus and random experimental plants).

Don't know what the previous owners were thinking/planting, as the yard was completely barren of plants when we moved in. Have to admit that I was kind of happy about this; clean slate and all.

The bed wraps around a retaining wall, and slopes downwards to the left side, which I suppose contributes to the challenge.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how I could clean up the shape?

Should I just clean up the lines, like this?

So far I have intentions of planting 3 larger shrubs on the sloping side, and placing a bird bath on the right side (retaining wall side), and planting around it.  The boys like to birdwatch from the window.

It's hard to tell without seeing the entire area, leading up to the other bed I see.  But, it does seem like it needs to be enlarged, and possibly connected to the other bed if possible.  A bird bath is a great idea.  Just remember to clean it out periodically. They tend to breed bacteria otherwise.
