my little girl Miley has had this swollen lip for a couple days. This has happened before when she was around 6 months old and we deduced it was because she has some allergy to the cheap plastic bowl we were feeding her in. After changing this to a new stainless steel bowl it went away after a few days. Now, suddenly it has come back. She still is using the stainless steel bowl and the only thing I can think of that changed was her food type over a month ago. She is still on friskies just a different flavor. She eats dry food. Any ideas on what else this could be? Open to all suggestions!

Sorry no one has responded yet. I guess most don't feel they have anything to add, like me! Is the swelling just in that front part of the lip? Do you feel any swelling or hardness underneath, like by the gums or jaw? That could be something totally different than an allergy.

I'm not really sure either. Whenever something weird like this happens, I just take them in to the vet. Maybe she bit her lip? I wonder if peroxide would help.

There are just too many things it COULD be! It could be allergies, a bug bite, a bad tooth. The only way to know for sure is to take her to a vet. My cat used to get a swollen chin from playing with wasps, but then another cat had a swollen chin from a bad tooth, so it is really hard to diagnose. The first thing to maybe do is to change back to the original food in case it is an allergy. All the luck and keep us posted on what you find, I, and I'm sure many others, are curious!

I agree with Di and Bob, there are many things it can be and we can't diagnose it from here.  I would see your Vet.

I also started a thread with the same question. I do have a appointment with the vet but not until Friday.

My cat does suffer from allergies but this has never happened before so I'm not sure what is going on with her now. She usually scratches her face until it bleeds when she has an allergic reaction to something.

The strange thing is I have 3 feral cats that have been having this same issue since last month. Not as bad as your cat but it does not look pretty.

I have been giving my cat Diphenhydramine that we had gotten from the vet the last time she had an allergic reaction to food. It does not seem to be helping much.

I too would suggest going to see the vet.as my cat was eating Friskies canned food for 3 years and then suddenly was allergic to something in it. She is also allergic to fish and fish oils, peas, soy, wheat gluten. You name it she is allergic to it. I just hope she is now not allergic to the only 2 foods she can eat now.

Good luck and I hope your kitty is feeling better soon.

Aw - that certainly is swollen. I enlarged the picture. I see puss under the swelling on one side of the lower lip. I also notice that the nostrils have some dried up discharge which could be caused from something going on inside the mouth. It really could be a number of things as the other poster's mentioned. Since this is the second occurrence, then it is something internal going on such as allergies - a tooth issue - or a virus of some sort that is recurring. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for Miley. Let us know what the vet found. :vibes:

I was wondering if you found out what was causing the swollen bottom lip.

My cats bottom lip is swollen but  her bottom lip is white looking. I have a feeling she is going to now be allergic to the 2 canned foods she is eating. They both contain chicken even though they are Turkey and Duck.

She is on Prednisolone for IBS, she gets it every other day. The day she takes it her lip will look a little better but then the next day when she does not have her meds it will be bad again.

I hope your kitty is doing much better.

Could be a bad tooth; an impacted tooth or an infected tooth; could be the feed causing irritation: do not give Greenies; Could be a Herpes sore or a canker sore; I would try a natural feed with Vitamins; Vitamin B2 Riboflavin prevents Herpes infections.  I would do a tooth x-ray first though.
