Why do some pet stores cater more to dogs?

I have noticed this especially with the Petco in my town. When I walk inside, I am immediately bombarded by dog stuff. There is a whole assortment of dog treats that look like cookies you would buy in a bakery, as well as a sizeable refrigerated section with fresh dog food. About 3/4 of the store seems to be taken up with dog food, toys, and supplies. There are a few aisles with cat food and litter combined tucked in a back corner of the store, and a just a few toys on the end of one of the aisles up front. I went in there one day just to find a pair of cat nail clippers and gave up. Petsmart has a few more cat items than Petco, but not much. I thought that just as many people (if not more) own cats as dogs, so what's the deal?

I've noticed that too. Not just at Petco/smart but there's a local pet store in town that I order my Rad Cat from. The store is 90% dog stuff and 10% cat stuff which is stuck in a corner way in the back. It's so annoying when I call to see if they have the RC in stock. I always get someone who has no idea what I'm talking about and the guy who answered tells me "we don't carry that." I had to tell HIM, "Yes. you do- check the freezer." It is so aggravating. All 3 kitties have taken very well to the Stella and Chewy's frozen so I'll have to get that from this little shop also. Let's see what they say when I call about that.

I went into the store to pick my order up a couple of weeks ago and told the girl behind the counter what happened when I called. Her answer was, "oh, he's kinda new". OK , that's nice. What if I didn't know you carried it? You would have lost a customer. I was picking up 6 containers. How about educating your employees about what you sell? That would be great.

Cats are more self-reliant (and intelligent) than dogs, and don't need to be pampered with "stuff".

I think more 'stuff' if you will goes with dogs.  All of the training from basic obedience on up to competitive obedience.  There are also several organized sports for dogs, agility, dock dogs, sledding  and retrieving competitions.  There are dogs that are actually working dogs, hunter's dogs, K9 dogs, and service dogs.  There is also the wide array of sizes from Chihuahuas up to Great Danes and St. Bernard.  Then there is every size between the extremes.  All of that means more equipment depending on the dogs sport or job and their size.

I don't even notice. i just zoom right to the cat section and assume every single staff knows about cats.
But now that I think about it, the cat section is about 25% of my favourite store while the other 25% are for birds and hamsters and guinea pigs and 50% are for dogs.

:yeah:

Not only that, but items meant for dogs and/or cats are usually displayed in the dog section.

:yeah: I'd also point out that dogs must be trained if you want to be a responsible dog owner. Now, let's be honest here...how many of us have been trained by our cats ? I think you'll find its no contest ;)
