I have a colony of 24 cats that are TNR'd except for two males and I am currently working on having them done also. I am wondering if Special Kitty Canned Cat Food is a decent brand? Has anyone had any tummy upsets or anything like that? I use their litter which is good but I feed my indoor kitties Friskies canned but I can't feed that many that much canned Friskies as Special Kitty is cheaper. Why I am not feeding the outdoor kitties dry any longer is due to one of the un-neutered males getting a blockage. Good thing I got to him in time. He is resting and doing well. I will no longer feed dry so now I am trying to figure how to buy this much canned food for a reasonable price.

Firstly, thank you for taking care of this colony! They are very lucky to have you

I have heard of Special Kitty causing GI upset, though I have never personally fed this food.

Have you look at ordering the food online? A case of 12, 13 oz cans from Chewy.com runs $12.89. Not sure if this is any cheaper than what you are able to buy or not.

Those are the ones I buy but I am wonder about Special Kitty because they come in these oversized, 1 pound cans.  I suppose I can buy about six cans and see. I saw them for 12 cans for about $8 or so.

Thank you, but I am equally as lucky to have them. They keep down the mice. ;) And keep me company.

Well, two days ago, I went ahead and bought a case of Special Kitty Pate Turkey and Giblets cat food, all the cats ate it up, including my house kitties. So far no tummy upsets. And no spit up. I've only tried this exact flavor so I'm not about the rest.

I know this is an old thread...but is case someone else gets here by searching I thought I'd add a couple of things!

Special Kitty products are made by J.M.Smuckers, the company that manufactures 9 Lives cat food, exclusively for Walmart. All of the SK products, at Walmart's insistence, and are made using the identical recipes/ingredients that are used for the corresponding 9 Lives products!

Individual cats can be allergic to the ingredients of some brands of food, or some varieties of some brands...but this doesn't mean that these foods are 'bad.'

As someone who lives on a limited, fixed income, with three, once feral, indoor cats...and (currently) a mini-colony of 6 outside ferals to support (down from a high of 23 ferals...all having been TNR'd) I've had to rely on Special Kitty canned and dried food for a number of years, now, because of the relative low cost, and have never seen evidence of any GI upsets among my friends.

:hithere: Welcome to TCS!! Your post is an answer to prayers - I have several elderly/disabled friends who are struggling to feed and was at a loss to help them as well as myself. I will pass on the word about SK food.
Also, KMart has Friskies on sale for 89cents for the 13 oz cans until July 6. Vons has their Champion Breed 13oz cans for 98cents but those cans need a can opener (no pop top).
Again, thank you for reactivating this thread!!

~ The 22oz cans of Special Kitty wet pate cat food is very convenient for feeding a large number of cats. I have talked to several people who use it for strays and feral colonies with no problems. They are keeping these abandoned animals alive and well with this food.
I use it now and then for my 'cat farm' with no problems. They seem to like Mixed Grill Dinner' the best. I mostly use Friskies Pate.

JamesCalifornia JamesCalifornia : Thank you!! i had not seen a 22 ounce can before but I can sure use that size. I know of another retired couple who can use that for their huge colony of mostly unfixed ferals - the cats eat a cheap corn-based cat food blended with cheap corn-based dog food plus cheap "duck bread".

My cat Pepper loves the Mixed Grill, hates the Ocean whatever it is in the blue can. He hated the Outdoor Dry food, but I bought the Complete Special Kitty and he loves it!!! Special Kitty is all I've ever fed him since getting him in March. Never caused GI problems. I also give him a hairball treatment 2x a week that his vet suggested to help avoid blockages. Pepper loves it.
